I didn’t think I’d like actual cellos, violins, and a flute performing this with electric guitars over the top. I was mistaken. They sound great in there. I wish the guitars were recorded better. Can anyone argue that this song and performance aren’t incredibly beautiful? Holy smokes.

@@dgoto90 Clapton is great and very influential but in terms of pure originality and uniqueness Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix take the top spots in my books. Both pioneered new ways to play guitar, Clapton is a fairly straight forward blues guitarist (not that that’s a bad thing)

Brilliant how they transposed the voice/lyrics into two guitars...without losing a thing! This arrangement and performance really brings forward the genius of Pete Townshend's writing, even more than the original.
@robertbykowski1398 Жыл бұрын
@siriusfeline More than the original?? Don't think so. This is a terrific performance, but the song's majestic lyrics and Roger Daltrey's passionate vocal bring forth the song's true brilliance. This song will always be the best in the Who's original recording.
@siriusfeline Жыл бұрын
@@robertbykowski1398 I know what you're driving at here, but I was referring to the genius of P.T.'s writing, not the performance aspect of his writing. You're right about the original being the best (ever) performance of this piece as it always will. It would be a sacrilege for me to say otherwise. The orchestra brings forward a fuller dynamic of the writing, in my mind.

@@TheEleatic Townshend is unique. Correct. Understated, but correct. He is one of Jimmy Page's favourite rock guitarists. Also correct. The feeling was not mutual. Incorrect, from an ability standpoint anyway. Townshend very much admires Page's ability in much the same way he admires Beck's. However, he loathed Led Zeppelin. Interestingly, so does Keith Richards. Also, I think Townshend had something personally against Page which goes back to the early days when Page wanted to form a group after his Yardbirds days were over and he tried to poach Moon and Entwistle from the Who.

@@davemakarchuk5127 Yes, Jimmy Page tried to poach Keith Moon from the Who in around 1968. I've seen film where Moon is talking and laughing about it and there are others in the room as well, and I've seen a clip where Townshend and Moon are talking. Seems Page was trying to put together his version of Cream or something and he was talking to Moon and Moonie was making a joke about putting he and so and so together and it would go over like a Led Zeppelin. Thus, the name. It's Moon's. As for me I never care for Zep much myself. My reasons don't matter to anyone else but me. Life, the universe and everything.

He was the greatest player to explore all the possibilities that the electric guitar could hold, and a pioneer of astonishing virtuosity.
