I have owned a RX400h, still do, for over ten years now. I have never had any issues. I’ve driven to Europe a few times in it, done pretty heavy mileage (nearly 200k miles on the clock) and I agree with the nice things you’ve said about it. However, you couldn’t have been farther from the truth when you stated that ‘it’s shit in snow’ because, my experience has been that it copes amazingly in snow. I have driven through some really bad conditions past other vehicles on the roadside which were unable to cope, this Lexus 400h has always performed superbly. The automatic 4x4 drive is quite impressive. Also, I have achieved just over 45mpg inner city mileage (A406 North London 8:30am), although I did drive like an angel to minimise fuel consumption and seldom drive like that.

We had one of these RX 400h. a) it NEVER ran silently. It was continuously topping up the battery, or putting it another way, the battery was giving the petrol engine a bit of extra help. Yes, it probably was more efficient than a simple V6 petrol. However, it never, ever ran silently like a Prius or Aurus hybrid taxi. We changed it for a Range Rover Vogue 4.4 diesel. The RR was quicker and more economical. b) On the other hand, the Lexus was impeccably reliable, and the Range Rover was a bucket of shite.

For a very old car it looks surprisingly well-kept. Zero warning lights is also a nice change from German or Range Rovers that always seem to have something going wrong. It's very middle class, but not everyone is trying to be the Duke of Westminster. Some just need a daily that has soft suspension that transports their family safely and comfortable. This really is the perfect car, albeit it does not have the charm or luxury of a Range Rover

I have had a 2007 RX400h for the past 7 years. Purchased for £12K with 64,000 miles on it. Now in Nov 2021, it has 140,000 miles. Love the car, works well, plenty of grunt and comfortable. Recommend you get a SEL as it has a Mark Levinson sound system, which sounds great. Always serviced by Lexus and few things have gone wrong. Hybrid battery passes it battery health check, never been an issue. Saw a American KZbin video on a 250,000 mile RX and still going strong on original Hybrid battery! Latest trip computer show last 3000 miles covered at an average of 30.6 MPG. Family of 5, all tall, 3 x 6+ footers and car accommodates easily. Love the flat floor in the rear. Cannot recommend enough. Only problem is - it still works, so no need for a newer car ;-)

The gearbox is what Lexus called an eCVT and bears no resemblance to a belt driven CVT, so no worries about catastrophic failures similar to those encountered in Nissan and Audi units. The “CVT” only refers to the feel of the drive, in the same way as the Lexus IS300h or Prius; they use the same tech to blend the power between the petrol engine and electric motors.

Rear brakes can be a problem on these. The electric regeneration does most of the rear wheel braking, so the rear mechanical brakes don't get a lot of use. This means they can get seized and need a rebuild, which can be expensive. If you have one, make sure you are heavy on the brakes now and again so the rear actually engage and it keeps them moving, and being used, rather than letting them fester for 90k miles without having them checked or serviced. Buying used, check the rear discs for rust to see if they are working or not. UK Lexus servicing can be expensive and some people don't have it done correctly.
@rtankard4 жыл бұрын
@Akira S Yes, it has a front electric motor, but a smaller 66bhp, 130Nm torque electric motor directly drives the rear diff, giving four-wheel-drive capability when required. There is no front-to-rear prop-shaft, so the petrol engine never drives the rear wheels. The front brakes do the majority of the braking, so there is only infrequent load on the rear, hence they only rarely require any mechanical braking. We don't have the Highlander here in the UK, so I couldn't comment on that.
@brokenworld14 жыл бұрын
As the other guys said, regen works on font too. Mine had original rear brakes at 90K! The calipers were mostly seized because of the lack of service that would normally happen when changing pads and disks etc.
@LondonSteveLee3 жыл бұрын
Every month or so - find room in a supermarket car park or whatnot and reverse fast hitting the brakes hard a few times - that will get the rear calipers moving and clean the rear discs up a bit.

they are so cheap because starting on 2006- they have recalled this cars for failing inverters (this could stall and cause accidents) replacement for the hybrid battery pack is also costly (it has more cells than a camry hybrid or prius) Replacement for failing inverters is not cheap either.
@Talismantra3 жыл бұрын
a few cool "hidden" features to discover too - the centre console slides back (for if you have a micro fridge or inverter sitting up front at the bottom 12v outlet, the extra smuggler compartments at the rear, the passenger seat can recline to virtually entirely flat to take a longer load to save mucking around with strapping to the roof bars, or to make a comfy enough bed for a 6'+ bloke on a cheap fishing/camping getaway or transport a person with a leg in a cast and still be seatbelt secured in the back seat, there are free ways to DIY upgrade the maps database (but now, with phones as good as they are, I don't even bother anymore). And if you can find one with the Mark Levinson sound upgrade it's so nice even by modern standards (except the era had no BT for audio, just for calls.)
@MrRonocMcfoley4 ай бұрын
I've just driven one today why does it not work for Audio
@Talismantra4 ай бұрын
@MrRonocMcfoley it doesn't have the BT-Audio feature, only BT-PhoneCalls. I used a tape adapter with 3.5mm cable initially to the phone, but eventually to a cheap BT device, which made the car music experience sadness in the end for that car when my newer phone dropped the 3.5mm jack - so instead of buying a BT audio adapter with a proper HiFi DAC I changed cars

Have always thought these big hybrids were a decent buy. Neighbour had a non hybrid V6 one of these which drank petrol at a horrible rate, plus it had air suspension and burst one corner bag, which cost a fortune to replace. I believe the hybrid has steel suspension, so more reliable and better fuel consumption! Plus they seem good value for money now. I own an 2007 Rx400h from new, done about 120.000 miles in it. Economy in the spring in the city can be as good as 8,5 l/100km if you are being careful. The most economical way to drive is a brisk acceleration from start and then coasting with the hybrid system. I know that people don't like cvt gearboxes but unless it is a double-clutch or one of these 8-speed gearboxes in current cars, then the cvt is in my opinion better. again you have to learn how to drive it. All these past years, never an issue with reliability. I have found that it is difficult to find an unauthorised dealer to work on it (at least in Vienna, Austria) so I take it to the official network which costs more. You need around €1000 every 30.000km. The amazing thing with this car is the quality on the interior as well as the comfort in traveling, plus it has all the gadgets anyone should really need (ok ok, no gesture control for the navi but all these kind of gadgets turn out to be a reliability headache). I would suggest to owners adding a GROM Vline unit to the stereo (mine being a later model has a much better screen than the one in the video). It adds CarPlay too making the car feel much more current. All in all if you compare it with similar aged and priced cars, the Rx is in my opinion the winner. Planning to drive it's wheels off and will miss it when it eventually dies!

It is my daily car and have now done nearly 80.000 kms myself. Apart from the regular maintenance (oil, filters, brake pads, gearbox liquid and the timing belt), I had two actual faults: both rear brake calipers jammed - the left one just after I bought the car and the right one last week. Nothing else, although after my 3 years the hybrid system is now showing signs of getting old. The fuel economy is slightly worse than when I bought it, the consumption was around 10 litres per 100km, now 10,5 litres on average. When the time comes to change the battery, I will have to think if it makes sense to spend another 3000 plus euros to replace it. The car is now worth around 8000/8500 euros here.

Everything worked, nothing broke while I had it, returned great MPG for something that size and weight and was probably one of the most comfortable cars we've had. As you say, you do get a bit obsessive about keeping it running on electric though. And regarding batteries, I've never come across one that's failed. In fact Lexus extended their battery warranty from 10 to 15 years while I owned it. I've never had a car that's gone back into warranty! Only thing I'd add to your list of things to look for is water ingress that ends up at the back end of the boot floor. There was an early bulletin in the US regarding a failed weld on the rear edge of the D pillar if I recall but could equally come from the roof rail feet or the base of the tailgate strut. Regardless, all solved with a blob of black mastic. Now I'm off to look again at the one you're currently selling 😀

I have the ‘06 and a few months in we had a torrential downpour in Seattle and that weld failure saw water run down inside the electrical control unit which fried it. Cost me $1,200 to replace. Probably should’ve been a recall rather than a ‘notice’ but we still drive and love the car.

I have owned an RX 400h for over 10 years and completely agree with the nice things that you said about it. However, your statement that ‘it’s shit in snow’ is incorrect. I can confidently confirm that it is pretty damn amazing in snow. I have driven in some pretty bad conditions, sometimes leaving other cars stranded by the roadside, and this 4x4 automatic has been nothing short of superb. I have also driven this car to Europe a few times with no issues and now the mileage is approaching 200k miles. It’s always been trouble free and I consider myself fortunate to own one.

The RX in this body style was launched in 2003 with the hybrid coming out in 2005/2006. All models had the cassette player, am/fm radio and in dash 6 disc CD player. The range topping SE-L has extra speakers as part of the Mark Levinson sound package. The sound is still fantastic. Those cars with this feature a speaker on top of the dash centre and Mark Levinson script on the centre console. Fantastic cars, I have a petrol 2004 RX300 and am loathe to change it for anything other than an RX 400h or an RX 450h. I get 25 to 29 mpg from the non-hybrid 3.0 litre V6. The best everyday car I’ve owned and tows trailers and caravan and boats with aplomb!

I have a 2006 RX 400h and I find that it is a wonderful car. Everyone makes the mistake of thinking that the hybrid uses a CVT but that's not the case. Instead, it uses a "planetary gear" system that will last as long as the engine. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a good used SUV. As a side note, this generation is the best looking one of all the RX's.

Honestly best car I have brought. As the interviewer says, this is NOT A PRIUS! forget your 4.0l/100K fuel economy. You would be lucky to get 9/100k. Honestly, BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED. Hands down, very silent car (someone has a broken car below in the comments). Fantastic to park, like I can't state how good and easy it is to park. So many nice features like EVERYTHING I could want. Drives, handles, just fantastic.

If I drive like a granny I get 25MPG. When you floor it the engine sounds pretty decent. Mine is a black 2007 SEL with similar miles & the upgraded stereo & half wood wheel so overall £3700 well spent & when you came from a 1.6 A Class auto feels fairly quick & comfy. *The main issue if you live in London (they are ULEZ compliant) is that approx 7 minutes after you buy it your catalytic converter will be stolen which takes approx 50 seconds. If you get another one & don't weld over some fairly serious steel about 5 minutes after you replace it it will get stolen again* The trade off with all that steel around the cat is the smoothness & quietness goes which is normally the acceptable trade off for the so so economy. Front parking sensors would be a bonus but with it having dvds in the headrests, 11 speaker stereo, decent engine full electrics & the mirror directing down as you put it in reverse it's a pretty strong spec for an old car!
@HighPeakAutos4 жыл бұрын
zone1hearing I meant to talk about lack of front sensors. It could’ve done with them. There should be a clamp down on cat thieves. It’s an increasingly common problem
@zone1hearing4 жыл бұрын
@@HighPeakAutos It's rife in London with Prius Auris & 400H's (having a raised ride height they are quicker to steal). Forget to mention from getting my insurance quote to clicking to buy it it went up £300! (Apparently the thieves started targeting them approx 6 weeks before I bought mine). Also the excess is the same price as the replacement 🐈... I think the weight discourages you from going too quick as you still need to stop & apparently they munch through discs & pads. Reliability, last time I went to Uganda I found every next car was a Toyota Harrier so I thought if they can't break them there there is a clue to their reliability!

My 2007 Rx400h has 230,xxx miles original battery.. has check engine light for catalytic converter because I bought it used and the previous owner didnt clean the throttle body and it ran too rich and burned the cat converter... but everything else works great.. it’s awd. One of the fans don’t work either so I have to drive and not let it idle too long on a hot summer day or else it’ll overheat but normal driving and long distance no problem. Would take it cross country. Fully loaded too. Bang for your buck. Make sure to buy one that’s been driven daily so the battery pack is healthy. All 4 air shocks are original and are all good. Comfortable ride. Go for it! Mark levinson sound system is awesome.

Great review, thanks! Just bought one and your review helped a bunch. Hoping it will serve well for the Canadian winter. So far very pleased, it accelerates very quickly with the gas engine and electric motor. Hoping to keep it for a while for driving day-to-day. Would much prefer a timing chain for maintenance and a non-CVT automatic transmission to enjoy it more like you said. Still a great vehicle!

@greatmoose172 жыл бұрын
That’s the deal with hybrids. If you drive them they will last forever. If you don’t drive a hybrid it’s a recipe for disaster. Stay away from older model hybrids that were their Florida car and such. Too much sitting for the battery. You’re much better off with a high mile one. My 400h has 218,000 miles and was driven since day one by previous owners. The dealer who has serviced it also since day one said it will last till 400-500,000 miles because it’s been maintained and driven.

I have a 2009 model, just over a year - zero problems so far other than the tires, you need to get decent branded tires! The main problem that will catch most people out, is that the lead acid battery is quite weedy, as it only does the 12v system. It doesn't start the car the hybrid electric motor does. However you will need a decent voltage on the 12v system otherwise the ECU doesn't boot up. So newer lithium 'jump start' leads that detect the car cranking over won't work :) I love the car - it's a bus, but a FUN bus.

Leaky radiator needs fixing and have a sound from the right suspension that will need some attention 28-30 mpg in town 35 motorway. I suspect the 450h may be even more refined.

Love the review. I have a 2006 rx400h. Bought it used with 120,000 miles on it. Put another 25,000 over the last 2yrs. Had no problems other than key did break off. I live in Nortwest Washington state in US where we have snow and ice. It's done well for me going over snow covered passes and icey roads. It's a very comfortable, quiet ride, perfect for long trips, hauling people or stuff. Dependable. Has aged well, interior and exterior. Most people are surprised how old it is. If I accelerate slow and antisipate breaking, it does well on gas. If you have a lead foot, not so good. Everthing works on it, even though dated. The Cons- It's a floaty ride. Steering is a bit sloppy. Does not take a tight corner. It's a boring middle aged person ride compared to the BMW previously owned. I have to make sure I don't leave key in ignition or a door open for too long or it won't start. When I first got it, I left it running for almost 2hrs because it's so quiet. I carry a portable battery starter that I've used several times. I want to sell it and get a 2010-2015. Would appreciate any input on best year for used car. P.S....Has anyone told Lexus the fronts on the new models are hideously ugly?
@HighPeakAutos4 жыл бұрын

Inherited my dad's 08 car at about 98k miles. Cracked bit of plastic on the side of the main radiator created a coolant leak, although without any overheating/warning lamps. The crack was visible from the front with the bonnet open so easy to check if you're buying one. Lexus Batteesea thinks worn front rubber suspension bushes and a front drop link are MOT failures and quoted about £2500 to fix, the car then passed the MOT elsewhere. Had to replace a sticky rear caliper. Other than that has been pretty reliable so far.
