Great video as always, editing on point as usual. I used to be a big BMW fan up to about a decade ago. Started with a couple of E36’s, first a 325i and later a 328i, absolutely adored those cars. Plenty of experience with the E46 as well. Never owned one but have driven them extensively. Solid and great to drive. Later I acquired a nearly new E93 335i (the convertible), and although I liked the car I couldn’t help feeling that some cracks were starting to appear in the overall quality of BMW cars. The vehicle, while an excellent performer, just somehow had a slightly brittle feel to it. Especially the interior, small trim pieces and some control knobs creaked in operation, a perceptible tactile downgrade from the slick and damped feel of the older generations. But the BMW that ultimately put me off the brand for good was the first generation 1 series. I drove a 118i for a few weeks while my Mini Cooper S was in for attention under warranty. In isolation the 1 series might seem acceptable but measured against say the yardstick Golf of the era, it fell short in every category, some comically so. Granted, in some very extreme driving situations the BMW might have the edge when it comes to handling, but I bet 95% of drivers would never push their cars that hard (and doing so on a public road is inadvisable). But aside from handling, everything else like performance, ergonomics, cabin space, build quality, luggage room, fuel economy, etc are just so much better in the Golf. And I’m not a Golf fan I’ve never bothered to own one. The 1 series felt like its only appeal was that badge on the nose. The car itself was un-BMW-like in every way. Sorry to the 1 series fans for my harsh criticism, each to their own, but this one was totally lost on me.

Brilliant. We got an eww and an urgh as the dubious delights of the interior were exposed, which was the first time I've heard such strong reactions. Plus the extra charge from the valeters, which is also a first since I began following the channel last summer, so this was definitely an exceptionally dirty purchase. What a splendid job they did, though, to make it habitable again. Clearly a mechanically sound example, so someone is soon going to be very happy with the car.
