I visit Cheaha Mountain, the rooftop of Alabama. Located in the Talladega Mountains in Cleburne County, the highest point in Alabama has an elevation of 2413 feet and is the 35th highest state highpoint in the US. Cheaha Mountain’s current look has a lot to do with the efforts put in by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. They built many of the structures still in use around Cheaha State Park. Join us as we explore America and go highpointing!

Waving from the shadows of this grand old man. Check out the Indian museum if you come back. Lots of great history there.

i went here today. there are two triangulation points. the actual HP is inside the tower, marked by a cross etched in a stone. the ranger said the boulders are loose and do not count as the HP. the bedrock is the actual HP that is calculated. the immediate surrounding ground was raised to match the height of the bedrock when the tower was built.

That's an interesting interpretation by the rangers. I think it's more they don't want people climbing on the boulders back there.

What's the history behind the bigfoot stuff there? Has there ever been a bigfoot sighting on the mountain. That sign is a cool photo op, Looking forward to "summitting" this next month.

Excellent info, however, as an Alabama native, I do want to mention some local pronunciations: CHEE-haw and Talla-DIG-ah

The word Talladega is pronounced Talladayga not deega

Thanks for watching Cary! So this one is interesting because there are multiple ways to say it. Before I started writing and researching I thought it was "day" as well, but after looking into it and talking with a few older folks from the area they stated the pronunciation was "deega" and not "dayga." Apparently when the NASCAR race took off and got popular the pronunciation of the word changed. To make it even more confusing there were also people who pronounced the city name one way and the mountains the other. To further add to it, the Muscogee pronunciation is a "dig." I ended up going with the way most people were pronouncing the mountains and running with it.

It's a bit of a running joke through the series that I'll mispronounce names but I had a bit of a laugh on this comment since the way I'm pronouncing Cheaha Mtn was how I was instructed to by a long time native of the area. Cheers and thanks for watching!

@@RooftopsofAmerica Haha. Oh okay. I have lived in the area for 35 years and every single person I know pronounces it “Chee-Haw”. But hey, what do I know, right? 😂🙄 But seriously, great content! Gained a new sub and fan!
