I honestly teared up at that part. my cat means the absolute world to me and I'd like to hope I'd've had the courage to do as Steve did. one thing can be certain however, and it gives me some measure of solace - during those final moments, neither Steve nor his cats were alone, because he sought them out. so, unfortunate as it may be, one of the last feelings Steve and his cats experienced was that of unmitigated love, a love with no concern for the most ultimate of danger. that is, truly unconditional care despite the harrowing and terrifying circumstances of the unimaginable. I personally don't believe in much by way of the supernatural or God or anything like that, but indeed if there is a home for us beyond life, Steve is there with his cats ❤

I remember this day very well. I vividly remember waking up that morning and walking outside onto the deck and feeling the warm air on my skin followed by several intense and cold breezes. I looked at the sky and thought "Today is going to be bad." My sister was living in the Georgetown Apartment complex at that time. Her apartment was on the 3rd floor, the top floor, of the building that was damaged the most by this tornado. She had gotten home from working an early shift and decided to take a nap because of how overworked she had been. About a minute before the tornado impacted the building her roommates boyfriend managed to break down her door after repeated attempts to wake her, and drag her out of bed into the hallway and lay on top of her to cover her. The entire 3rd floor of the apartment complex was lifted off of the rest of the building, swung around and slammed into the ground about half a football field's length away. In the aftermath when they were clamoring to escape the rubble they caught a glimpse into her room, and the entirety of the roof had caved and collapsed right on top of her bed. My sister would not be alive today if it weren't for him. I'll never forget how she looked when she arrived where I was living, covered in dirt, cuts, bruises, tears and fiberglass insulation. I'll never forget the tone of her voice when she burst open the door and yelled for our dad. I'll never forget witnessing the aftermath of this catastrophe driving through Washington the next day. And I'll never forget the sinking feeling in my gut that autumn morning. Thank you for covering this tornado, and thank you anyone who reads this.

My house got hit by this tornado, although not as bad as some others. I remember vividly looking at the end of our cul de sac and seeing the tornado peer over our neighbors house. Me, my mom, and my brother were already in my basement but my dad was working on a project in our garage. My mom sent me up to get him because we hadn’t known the tornado was so close to us yet. As soon as I got upstairs I looked out the window and saw it I forgot whatever I was doing and just looked in awe. Luckily my dad had been listening to the radio and heard to take cover. He came and rushed me into the basement with the rest of the family. My dad was the only one that wore shoes so we had to wait in the basement while he walked through the glass and debris upstairs to get our shoes. My dad was into antique tractors so luckily we had an old mini bulldozer that we could hitch a ride on out to the road where our grandparents waited in their car. My mom stepped on a nail on her way over to the road behind our house and had to go to the hospital. Such a crazy day. That day marks the start of a new period of my life, but I never knew it was such a devastating and powerful tornado. Great video! I’m glad you highlighted how much the community came together to help each other out afterward.

God, FEMA denying any help on basis of population is disgusting. I can't remember a time where FEMA has actually helped disaster victims. On November 26, President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the State of Illinois making residents and businesses eligible for federal Individual Assistance funding which provides financial assistance to help with temporary housing, home repairs or replacement and other disaster-related expenses. More than $21 million in federal aid has been approved to help people and businesses affected by the November tornadoes and severe storms. What was denied was addendum money later for Walmarts, McDonalds and other multibillion dollar corporations that were insured.

If you notice recently, the NWS has stopped short of rating tornadoes from their top rating. For example, we recently experienced what the NWS called an EF3 in Winchester, Indiana. All while many trees were partially debarked, concrete structures were highly damaged, extreme ground scouring, and even one area had a 15ft section of pavement ripped out of the road. They rated it 1mph below the EF4 rating. When, there was CLEAR mid-EF4 damage.

We had tons of help even if FEMA didn't do anything at all. You would be amazed at what kind of stuff people donated. I’ve always been absolutely terrified with tornadoes but I’ve watched a ton of videos about tornadoes. The way you put this video together… I feel like it showed just how terrifying tornadoes are and did such a good job with it. I think specifically how you showed the tornado moving and the land being cleared behind it… it’s just devastating to watch.

I just had to take the time to comment. As a storm spotter & meteorology enthusiast, I consume a lot of storm media videos and this video is very well done. Great footage collection, satellite images, damage paths, human impact stories, recovery efforts, all while keeping a even composure of dictation. I'm subscribed. FEMA did provide $2.5 million in grants and $21 million in low interest loans for individuals and business, but as you stated, denied the $21.4 million requested to reimburse local governments for clean-up and infrastructure repairs. Fortunately the Illinois state governments came together to raise $45 million for the affected communities. This event did spark some hearings of government officials questioning the formula used by FEMA for damage assessments. Thanks again for the effort of putting the video together!

I wish I could just train my cats to somehow head for cover on their own (and that I had better cover to offer them). I live in Wisconsin. We get out fair share of warnings being near the Illinois border. One warning about 2 yrs ago was at 2am. I woke up my kids, threw my birds in their birdie backpack and ran 2/4 cats downstairs. I ran back upstairs to get one more cat and nudged him downstairs, forgetting he was completely blind and in a panic. Poor thing rolled down the steps. I felt so bad. The 4th cat is feral and hates me. I have better chances surviving a ef4 twister than I do trying to pick him up. So i left him under the couch where he likes to hide. Yes. My cat falling downstairs was fine. He was a 21 pounder with plenty of cushion. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ok so I completely agree what happened to the people of Washington by fema is absolutely disgusting. What you're claiming about Hurricane Helene is not accurate at all. I live in the devastated area and Fema has been on the ground since before the storm got here. Money was available the day after, with more funding afterwards. Alot of people although not in thier own homes yet we're able to have Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations because of the fema funding. And rebuilding has already began..... don't believe everything you see on the internet, people make stories seem worst to fit thier own narratives. And say what you want without Biden signing disaster relief prior to the storm alot of what's happening now wouldn't be possible. It's alot more then trump ever did during his 1st administration, it didn't matter whether we voted for Biden or not he got the ball rolling and come and just throw paper towels at us.......

Excellent video! As a paramedic who responded there that day I can say that it is spot on! I will share some additional insight to the low death count as a thank you. Washington Illinois is a very religious (Christian) town and nearly everybody goes to church. The majority of the city was in church when the tornado struck. That along with the things you mentioned (basements, warnings) surely saved hundreds of lives. I made a slide show documentary of this tornado as well but it sucks in comparison to yours.

I wonder if the high visibility of the tornado also led to the low death toll, since some people "need" to see a funnel before they will take action. Contrast that to Joplin 2011 that was shrouded in rain and killed 50x more.

Actually, it's not just "... *some* people "need" to see a funnel before they will take action"...", it's *most* . Social scientists & psychologists have done studies which have established that at least 70% of people will try to visually confirm the tornado before taking action (...especially males...). This makes any live video captured by storm chasers, 'tower cams', and 'traffic cams' broadcast on TV or the internet extremely valuable, because, for most people, seeing video of a funnel/tornado approaching their location can convince them to to seek shelter well before the tornado arrives, instead of waiting until the last minute when they may see it.

I'll never forget that day, this was the worst tornado experience that I have ever seen. I'm from Peoria and luckily, we were safe, but my uncle lost his home in that tornado. My uncle survived and made it into the basement in time. I remembered the day before, it was unusually warmer than normal (the temperature in Peoria went up to 75°F on the day before the Washington, IL tornado). Then, on the day of the tornado, I remember the skies were so dark and the winds picked up. The next day, my family and I went to what was left of my uncle's original house to help, and I was just so devastated and heartbroken. This was the first time in my life that I experienced tornado damage in person. My uncle's house has since then been fully rebuilt, but some of the scars from that tornado are still there today. Also, quick date correction to point out regarding to Plainsfield, IL tornado (14:57-15:16), that tornado occurred on August 28, 1990 -- not 2013. Yet, 1990 and 2013 were still bad years for tornadoes in the United States. I was only 11 months old when the Plainsfield tornado occurred, but I had always lived in Peoria since I was born.

And when the sirens went off, she took me down into the basement with a bottle and a blanket, eventually it passed and we could come out. 6:03 this is where my house is. It was narrowely missed by the tornado, and it was shown on camera. I recognized the area as soon as I saw the fence. Seeing this footage shows how lucky some people were, but also how unlucky others had it. My family didn’t live in Washington at the time of the tornado, but still seeing this is crazy because the house I call home now could have been destroyed terribly.
