It ain't perfect but it's fun. That's the Tactical .22 or T22 in a "nutnshell." In this vid I define exactly what I think a Tactical .22 is, talk to possible POUs, and discuss its highs and lows. A Tactical .22 is outfitted with the capabilities that will allow it to play in an advanced tactical carbine-type drills like seen in a Nutnfancy RunNGun since 2008. All weather, day or night, the T22 should be ready to rock and roll with an attached light (on rails), single point sling attachment, threaded muzzle, and 25 rd or more magazine capacity. A good trigger, pistol grip, adjustable LOP, BUIS that are co-witnessed, VG, and/or bipod add to the functionality and enjoyment factor but aren't mandatory. Some POUs for the T22 include recreation (#1), competition (forgot to mention that one), survival, training, project gun, and introduction gun for the female or young shooter. The limited range, extended TOF of the .22 rimfire, often times errant reliability (some ammo related), and less blast/recoil sometimes dissuade would be buyers. That's understandable. But the highs are substantial and win me over, even with current technology. First and foremost is the economy. Expect about 1/10th the cost of centerfire alternatives. For that huge cost reduction, I will put up with a few jams as I send 1000s, not 100s, of rounds downrange. This allow outstanding levels of fun and training you just cannot afford with centerfier (unless you're sponsored!). More good things follow: less noise/blast (also a good thing), lighter weight for female/young shooters, good accuracy, and the ability to engage close-range steel targets. Engaging steel with your T22 can be done at very close ranges (using Actiontarget.com targets) and allows for seamless fun with no delays in scoring PBGs. Several excellent varieties have been reviewed and recommended here in TNP (shown). Current generations of the T22 are indeed imperfect but their upsides are endearing. ///////////// Awesome music by / insomniakstrance (song is called Tech Showcase #12 from MSquare Recordings, see www.square-recordings.com)

The 10 second sum up of tactical .22's If you get one that's ergonomically similar to a platform you're using in a larger caliber it is an economically wise decision. If it's just to look tactical it's pretty much mall ninja supreme. Done.

yeah it's strange, people tend to think of a 22 as a glorified BB gun but it's not readily viewed as the very deadly weapon that it is good cheap shooting fun, and would certainly stop someone in their tracks (especially being a semi-auto)

We thin that tactical .22s are a great way to stay sharp year-round, expecially considering ammunition costs and depletion in certain areas. We happen to be situated in California so all of our comments and reviews really reflect the highest density, harshest law rarest ranges / obstacles, and all around harshest climates for Tactical enthusiasts, but still try to navigate the industry and find the good stuff using CA / bay area as a test bed. We love Nutn' Fancy and look forward to future conversations.

Another video showing exceptional knowledge for the subject of your video I really can't get enough of your videos. There isn't one other place I can go for such in depth and well-spoken table top reviews. I recently bought an M&P 15-22 and will be getting some range time in on Saturday. The superb take on the tactical .22 is honestly invaluable to someone in the market for one. Thanks for all you do for the community Nutnfancy.

Thanks for doing the whole nine yards on the .22s nutn. And thanks for keeping it real. Look at that Sig go. It's so much smoother than all the others out there. To me the little bit more money is worth it for the enjoyment I would get. That was a pretty exhaustive rundown. I know I'm tired. Keep up the excellent, excellent work.

One thing to consider. If a firearm performs 100% then you lose the chance to train for malfunctions. FTF,FTE, bad round, Mag issues, etc. They all happen on centerfire as well. So if your rimfire bobbles once or twice in 100 rounds is not necessarily a bad thing. Gives you a chance to practice clearing malfunctions in whatever way is proper for that malfunction. If your 'tactical" training as per this video, that is an advantage in the POU of this type of weapon.

A marine buddy once told me that the .22 is one of the best rounds on the planet, because they're some of the lightest guns and ammo on the planet, and you can find it anywhere you go. I firmly believe in this philosophy, and while I don't EXCLUSIVELY shoot a .22, it's still one of my favorite calibers.

@Hornman120 Thanks and you were wise to let him shoot the .22s first off. Lots of guys don't clue into that, let the newb shoot the big guns, and they solidify their fear of guns when the experience the recoil. Pellet guns and .22s are the stepping stones.

I picked up a mossberg 715t for xmas, and the first thing I did was strip it down and clean it. Yea, it is a little more work then some, but not bad. The gun is no cheap toy, and is real fun to shoot. If you watch this vid, it fits right in with what a tac22 is all about. happy new year!

Great video. I liked your comments regarding the advantages for young or inexperienced shooters. I had a foreign exchange student from Germany that I took out to the gun club. He had never fired a gun (it's as bad in Germany as in the U.K.). He expressed some reluctance but he did shoot the .22 that I brought along. Actually fired a lot of rounds through it. But, when I offered my SIG P239 and RRA AR-15 to try he firmly said NO.

@TheHiddenPart I may review that sometime but it is a replica gun. It lacks railing, optics mounting, a single point sling attachment, threaded muzzle, and adjustable LOP. Also it has a long double action only style of trigger that I find disturbing for a .22. That's a lot of downsides that need correcting for it to work in a RunNGun.

I gotta say that I love .22LR. Ruger makes some great stuff and they are cheaper than dirt to shoot. Plus, if you're good at small targets (e.g. heads), they will make good home defense weapons. Ruger let's you deck out your gear so easily. I love it! Those S&W look cool too.

Hey TNPers, I use the CMMG .22lr conversion in my Bushmaster. I bought this after seeing Nutnfancy's review of this item and at first I was very dissapointed since mine seamed to have nothing but problems even though everyone I talked to had nothing but good to say about them. After a bit of tinkering I found that the recoil spring was a little week not closing the bolt completely, so I just stretched the spring out a little giving it more tension.

Although they are quiet, the frequency of the "crack" from the .22 is the optimal frequency to destroy hairs in your ears and actually cause more damage to your ears than, say, a gunshot from a 5.56. Something you might want to take into consideration for the future....

many will, but there are some things that you cannot do with a .22lr... especially when you have a class designed for a rifle or carbine in a rifle, sub-rifle, and even pistol calibers. I think it is a fantastic training tool (a must have) and even a great "SHTF" option as long as you recognize its limitations and you are realistic with your expectations.

That the fact that rim-fire is less reliable than center-fire can be a plus. I have 1000 rounds through my lwrc, and i haven't had a single failure. So i have no experience clearing a jam, let alone clearing one under pressure. I kinda like the idea of learning to deal with more jams in a .22 so when I finally do have one with my main gun, it won't be nearly as stressful.

I don't know if Sig has started including these to compete with S&W, but they are there. I will also have to check and post back, on the rattle of the stock, and the tolerances of the rear push pin.

@xxstargatemanxx Because they use a centerfire primer, the primer is in the center of the head of the cartridge, 22s use a rimfire where the primer is around the rim of the head of the case.
@Trigunnie45

@Kueche90 A rimfire 22 cartridge has a small amount of "rim" protruding from the base of the shell casing that holds the shell in the breech of a firearm. A centerfire cartridge has the rim extended to the same width of the casing for an extractor to grab and eject the shell casing. wikipedia, Rimfire, and centerfire. Hope this helps mate, cheers.

@ShootsStuffs Yeah my Marlin 795 manual basically says you shouldn't have to clean the barrel. And due to the design, with a straight rod, you can't fit it down the barrel unless you went from the muzzle end in to the receiver. It's been very reliable though I haven't fired that many rounds through it yet.

What stupid, ignorant statement. There are many hunters who have easily taken down wild pigs, deer, etc all with a shot to the head with a .22. Also .22 such as cci stingers will destroy a freaking squirrel. The .22 is the deadliest, most underrated caliber thanks to ignorant people like you. I say deadliest becase people dont anticipate any recoil and become super accurate with them, especially on follow up shots.

Uh, dude, you barely touched on the CMMG drop in bolt conversion kit for AR-15s. In MY opinion this is the best option out there. you can train with your everyday rifle for cheap and everything except the recoil stays the same. You have 2 guns in one, warm up with the 22 and then replace your bolt and your playing with the big boy version. You can train your kids on the same rifle they will eventually graduate to. But nice Vid none the less they are lengthy but lots of good info and fun to watch

The four .22's on the table top are all great guns. I suppose it comes down to what a person is looking for function wise and the features offered. I went with a S&W 15-22, because it mimics the AR. Also, the 15-22 can be modified exactly like its big brother center-fire. Therefore, I use mine as a training gun, as well as having a lot of fun too. Also, shooting .22's is profoundly cheaper. If you shoot a lot. The savings alone in ammo, will pay for the price for one of these babies.

Once again a very informative video. I am still looking at the options for a tactical .22. I do like the economy of the rounds and it would be a great proving ground for the upgrades I want to make to my full .223 platform. Thanks.

The 10/22 is an excellent stand in for the ak platform. Disregard the safety and its a rim fire ak

@ignoreboco Must have slipped by and it was probably in one of my earlier shoots. When shooting steel I am 100% eye glass wearing now.

Yeah that is correct. I like the AR style stocks but they don't offer much in terms of training besides sights, and the pistol grip. Going to get a Troy T22 Chassis just for fun really. The main reason is shooter comfort and the fact the stock can be adjusted for women and children. A 1022 with stock sights/Butler Creek Folder kind of does remind me of a side folding 22lr AK. Not sure how good the newer 22lr AKs are.

@Cr0cket20 Great point Cr0cket. Although, I think the internal debate would be which to buy FIRST at this point...the AR or the T22? Personally it would be to get the more expensive one first so that you will always have your "go to war gun" at hand and then go from there.

@nutnfancy I believe what he is describing is similar to many military training similations. What he means by live fire is not an actual situation where people are shooting at eachother but around eachother during a drill. The sound of other guns being fired (other than your own) during a high stress drill is very unsettling. Though this drill is unsafe, it would still be cool to watch on youtube. And it would denounce a lot of nutnfancy haters. You'd probably get another 100,000 viewers ;) ,

Great video as always, even for someone who doesn't own a gun or a knife. I'd love to see some optics reviews! (monoculars, binoculars, spotting scopes etc.) That would be fantastic

Funny thing about Tac.22's is that there's an on going conversation I have with a buddy of mine about .22LR vs. AR-15... he keeps talking about how much he REALLY wants to get a 10/22 like mine...but he really REALLY wants an AR...yet not something like what is shown here... SO, I keep saying.... DUDE! Get the AR-15 that you want during a decent mark down in price (like the RRA one that was/is out) and spend the $1k-1500 and then snag a CMMG .22LR conversion...you get the best of both worlds!

In the video, you said about suppressors. Who makes a suppressor for the S&W 15-22? Good vid on the plus and minuses of rimfire 22's.

@nutnfancy Hey, nutn, at 9:01 the annotation said: Their "Handguard Rail Kit" been "temporarily out of stock" for over a year! You'll want to put the word 'has' between Kit" and been.
