Crawford wisely took an ownership stake in the show in lieu of a salary. He cleared an average of $550K/year while the show was on. These cars were so stylish and comfortable to ride in. But for the young people they had drum brakes. So they weighted far more than today's cars and had terrible brakes--bad combo. They had carburetors that needed to be cleaned/rebuilt on a regular basis instead of the fuel injection cars have today that never breaks. They had ignition points and a distributor instead of electronic ignition so that was always a problem. They had shocks that lasted 20,000 miles tops. Tires lasted 15-20,000 miles. Minor accidents often resulted in terrible injuries/deaths when today you are more likely to walk away from almost any accident.
@alphonsozorro79524 жыл бұрын
" Minor accidents often resulted in terrible injuries/deaths when today you are more likely to walk away from almost any accident." Modern SUVs that make up 60% of US-registered cars are tombs on wheels. What modern cars with safety features have achieved in lowering the number of fatalities, have been taken up by a higher number of crippled. 3 million people use wheelchairs in the US, 70% from traffic-related causes. Better die than live as a cripple.
@bertgrau92463 жыл бұрын

@@bertgrau9246: Yeah, different problems. Before platinum plugs and fuel injection you had to do maintenance on a car driven any distance EVERY YEAR or it would deteriorate in how it ran and mileage. Now between platinum plugs and fuel injection, until a car gets to be about a decade old, for the good brands -- they just RUN. They start every time. All you have to do is change the oil and maybe change radiator fluid, etc. every 5 years or so, buy tires when they wear out, and you're golden.
@tralfazy Жыл бұрын
Yes..all of that. In the 50s when we took a cross-country trip we always had some kind of a breakdown. The generator goes out (not alternator), a tire blows, the radiator sprang a leak etc. We expected at least one breakdown on every trip. Cars are far more reliable now (2023), especially the tires.
