No one who has or had aged parents, or has grandkids, can fail to identify with this episode's theme. The miraculous change that the grandpa went through was far fetched but after all so is this series. The picture of an old man standing with his wet pants is not something you see everyday on TV and the whole series suddenly became very true to life. Well done Highway team. what a story for old people like me! that's our problem senior citizens! we lost our consciousness when we got old and seems no one understand us! in this film there's an angel helping, in reality it is us who got to understand old people! Godbless!
@hubbaman9885 Жыл бұрын
When a good majority of you "senior citizens" wake up and understand that times change with younger generations after you, us younger folk might be more understanding. Most older folks refuse to live in the now and adjust with the changing times. So you didn't grow up with tv, or cell phones, or computers. Well I did, so I didn't live during Vietnam or WWll, well I didn't exist then so how could I fully understand those times? Had thay battle with my own grandparents. Never accepting my generation which is Generation X. It's a two way street, respect and dignity is never one way, and sadly it is. It's wrong to throw away someone because they're elderly yes, but us younger folks won't stick around if you deny us a little respect in return. Wake up.

This episode just cut too close to home for me. When I was married to my ex-wife her mom lived with us and I didn't mind at all it was the right thing to do to make sure she was taken care of but my ex-wife despised my mother and we got into an argument every time I even went over to check on my mom. We soon divorced and my mom had a stroke and a heart attack two heart attacks and I'm just glad that I'm there to take care of her I would never throw someone out whether it was my wife's or my mother out because they bed wet. The elderly gentleman's name is Lew Ayres and he played in the "Dr. Kildare" movie shorts in the 1930's. He also played "Mr. Zelinka" in another "Highway To Heaven" episode of I'm not mistaken. He's a very good actor and his portrayal of how the elderly are cast off in this country by brainwashed yuppies is very poignant...too bad the episode leaned a little too far to the middle because when families once lived close to one another it seemed in most cases to promote stronger values, especially when the elderly were given honor and respect as rightful mentors to the younger generations. The elderly are NOT a burden, America, they are a blessing!!!

Very sad ending. His son's wife pushed him out. I told my husband his parents could live with us if ever they couldn't live alone. My parents are gone now. It's so important within a covenant marriage to have such conversations; because once a person marries it's simply too late to change a spouse's mind whom might be opposed to such arrangements.
@GlennaVan4 жыл бұрын
It's not a sad ending at all. He turned himself around. He felt he had nothing to live for after his wife died and was just waiting to die himself - that had nothing to do with his son's wife. It was actually good he did not go back there because he would have fallen back into the same behavior rather than live the rest of his life. His daughter-in-law lived with it for a year - that is a long time to have someone around you depressed all the time and not doing anything for himself. If he had been meeting with friends, going to the senior center, etc., it would have been quite different. Living in a house and making an effort to be part of a family is quite different.

The grandad wouldn't want to damage his sons life and break his grandsons heart.. he will think he's the selfish one. 😔 Sometimes it is the wisdom that solves it all. Sometimes wives/daughters think they can handle it until it dawns on them and frustration hit them hard. The best solution is team work. Moms cousin.. an elderly himself took care of his Dad. He did restroom stuff.. washed him and bathed him while his wife took care of the rest. That is how things should be.

You forget she took care of him for a full year. It sounds like he was grieving so much for his wife that he was doing nothing for himself. I'm sure she would have given him rides to the senior center or even welcomed his friends to the house once a week for cards, etc. Remember, even in the home, he wasn't doing anything until Jonathan intervened. He was just counting time until he died. If he had started walking with his grandson while he was still at the house, everything would have worked out fine. It is very stressful being around someone who will do nothing for himself - I know because I went through several years of it - my husband actually told the doctor to cut off his legs when the doctor told him if he didn't get up and move around he would lose them! It's extremely difficult to deal with that type of attitude. It did not help when the husband told her she had nothing else to do but take care of his dad! He could have helped with his dad's care - taken him places, etc., rather than just leave him there all day and night.

@GlennaVan4 жыл бұрын
That is not true. When my husband needed extreme care, he went to an adult foster home. He had very good care and visitors as well (including his dog) and had a private room. Adult homes are quite different from nursing homes. Most have group activities for the residents and they generally have private rooms; I know of none that have more than two in a room and those are only those who are absolutely bedridden. If you have family who loves you, living in a care facility need not be lonely. If you don't, even being at a home shut in a room with no one bothering with you can still happen. Look around. It's not like it used to be . . . . or doesn't need to be.

That is the part that people don't understand. Until they have been close up and involved, they don't realize how it is to take care of someone for an extended period of time when that person is not even trying to live better. In the case of the program here, something should have been mentioned about grief counseling for the grandfather because addressing his real problem made all the difference. If anyone had bothered to get him out walking while he was at home, it would have been quite different.

The key is to not give up, to resist believing the grass in greener elsewhere, and to try removing yourself from your problems, whatever they may be. Sometimes refocusing by helping someone else gets you out of your own head and also gives you the satisfaction of redirecting your energies. Good luck to you.

Cynthia Lyman I was going to say the same thing. When I feel my problems are getting too big (besides praying) I try to help someone else. It doesn't remove my problem but it does make me feel less hopeless.

Starr, Irma above said to read John, I'd like to add read Romans 8 and then the proverbs. There is an answer to every problem we encounter in the bible, sadly the religions have pushed people away from God and His word so people have lost faith. Jesus is still faithful and true and He will prove it IF you focus on Him.

Starr Meadows I feel the same way an awful lot then I feel His presents in something I do and it gives me hope. The world is in a terrible place right now and it’s hard not to get depressed but it will all be worth it some day.

Oldies, keep your homes and do not bother your kids. I am 62, and my then-wife left me when I got sick. I told her that after 20 years she didn't know me. She thought when I was sick, I would not have any income. She kicked me out of the house I had built, but I managed myself and bought a house without any loan. Now, I have a good pension and earn some money in the stock market. I won't bother my son, because I learned in life that a person needs only one thing: freedom!

Another diffrnt episode, nothing's in clear cut black and white but shades of grey with unexpctd twists....the wife isn't all bad, she's just having a hard time and can't cope...the kid's great...and the end is kept open....

Thank you for recognizing the wife was having a hard time. Frankly, that she did it for a full year before complaining is a lot in itself. There would have been no wet bed had he just worn diapers which was likely suggested and refused. Also, if he refused to eat as he did at the home, that would be maddening as well. Husband didn't seem to be helping, no evidence of him taking his dad out to do things, etc.

That house wife pissing me off! She gets to do nothing no job doesn't pay rent she freaks out if she has to help a family member out. If she can't play nice I ground her to she can learn to behave.

Seriously? She took care of him for a year, she may have even had to give up a job she loved to do it. The bigger question his why was his own son not helping?

@@GlennaVan so you are also selfish.. always thinking of self.. in the old days.. people did not blink at work or worry whether they had to work more than others because they loved people

I disagree with Michael Landon aka Johnathon on this episode. The grandfather didn’t deliberately wet the bed, he has a physical condition that makes him wet his bed. It wasn’t his fault that he couldn’t control his bladder, and it wasn’t his decision to move into a convalescent home. So, he feels depressed and unwanted, that’s natural. Maybe he is giving up, but the people who was the closest to him, his own daughter-in-law, gave up on him too. Why didn’t Johnathon see that? Sometimes I don’t or didn’t always agree with Johnathon’s melding, I know he had to meddle in order to get his wings, but sometimes I thought he meddled when he shouldn’t have. I disagreed with him on this episode-did you? GOD Bless and take care ✌🏻

I don't know, I agree the man can't be blamed for having some incontinence and feeling depressed as a result of being farmed out. But, I think he was right about a gentleman not giving up on his time left, especially with his grandson who obviously cared about him.

Getting old stinks but considering the alternative i suppose its not so bad. Its just the rebellious body that aggravates me mostly. Not feeling needed or wanted anymore really stinks too. Seeing Michael Landon having heart to heart talks with "Albert"( the grandson) reminded me of LHOTP episodes.

Most parents do their best to upbring their children in every aspects. Hence when they are old, fragile and need more attention, they are often being neglected as their own children, DIL or SIL has neither compromice nor sacrifice toward these elderly generation .
