I think what made the Angus Episodes so damn good was a certain simpatico, an excellent conspiracy, between the writers and Angus's delivery. Perfect comedy is a mesh between idea, language and delivery. The team in those days was so tight in that regard, which, imo, few later day hosts meshed as tightly. Sometimes, nowadays, you can sense the written joke bombs due to the host.

Angus Deayton was the best thing about this programme.

Sometimes I think so, and sometimes I don’t - I like the perfectly dry, sarcastic, British, delivery, but then when the guest hosts came they brought a nuanced and unscripted nature to it 🤔

When I was younger I liked Paul Merton more - when I became older I (past 25) I liked Ian Hislop more. Is anyone else the same - or vice versa?

~8:34, Gryf went into a Pete and Dud voice, after which I was so expecting a Monty Python Dead Parrot reference. But it never came. That story was sooooo asking for it.

No one delivers a dry, wry, sarcastic, ironic line as well as Angus. Those tiny smirks and faux po-faces are wonderful. And then his smile breaks out to join in the joke he has just cracked. Soooo much better than that up-himself, straight faced pretender Merton.

I too dislike Merton but only one of them got caught with coke and hookers.
@thedolphin54284 жыл бұрын
@@LoneKharnivore Yes, but I've never understood those who conflate a personal lifestyle with a professional one ... unless the former illegally impinges on the latter -- eg, a pedophile priest. Maybe Merton eats his peas off a fork. What business is that of HIGNFY viewers?

@Karen DeGenerous Well, the BBC only react to public/audience umbrage because the general populace consider his off screen antics as "news" and "immoral". His personal life did not impinge upon his employed professionalism -- so everyone should have just ignored it and left him alone. But Merton had some personal crusade against Angus (comedic jealousy, methinks) . Such bumptious moral do-gooding annoys me, especially as firing Angus wrecked the show, imho.
@galesito17334 жыл бұрын
@@thedolphin5428 The problem was that every time Angus made a witty remark about someone else's private life (such as multiple jokes about Frank Bough doing coke and prostitutes, which Angus did a lot) then they only have to turn around and say "well what about you?" I think the guest host format has made for some fantastic episodes such as Boris, Brucie, Tom Baker (my favourite episode), BRIAN BLESSED, William Shatner, etc.

I grew up in a time when CCTV was relatively new as well, it wasn't absolutely everywhere like it is now. And ALL shops were closed on Sundays. It does seem unfathomable now.
