The funny thing is that this programme was not the last of the last century nor indeed of the last millenium. The Gregorian calendar that we all use does not have a year 0, so the last year of both the 20th century and the 2nd millenium was 2000, not 1999.

Well we think of poor old Gove when Deedes admits to Purple Hearts. They were legal in 1955 and of course they all took them during the war which I think Deedes was in. The Telegraph was at it’s absolutely most two-faced when he ran it. I think I’m right in saying the DT actually bought « Private Eye » at this time. One needs to spend some time contemplating the notion of « Private Eye » being owned by the « Daily Telegraph » before the complete absurdity of it sinks in. There has been no serious attempt in any medium to launch a vehicle to undermine the establishment by exposing undesirable truths since this time. I think I’m the only one still full time at it.
