From series 1 (1990) until series 10 (1995) the show was chaired by Angus Deayton, with team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton and a guest on each team. For series 11 (1996), Merton - aside from the first episode where he appeared as Hislop's guest - took a sabbatical, and so his team comprised two guests. Clive Anderson, Alan Davies and Eddie Izzard were all assigned 'guest captain' status in their appearances, although there were two episodes where Hislop's opponents were considered a 'double act' and neither was referred to as captain. The original line-up was restored for the following series, and remained that way until series 24 (2002).
Following tabloid newspaper revelations about his private life, Angus Deayton was sacked after two shows of series 24. His spot has been taken since by many different guest hosts. Due to the suddenness of Deayton's dismissal, and with no time to book a seasoned replacement, Merton himself filled the position for the first programme after the departure (with Ross Noble filling the vacant captain's chair).
For its first 19 years, the show was recorded on Thursdays and broadcast the following evening. For the two series in 2010, the show was moved back a day to Thursday (recorded on Wednesday), with the exception of the episode after the 2010 general election, but returned to the original setup the following year.[1]
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 59th series was not recorded in a studio, but with the participants filmed from home and composited into a virtual set. Due to the extra editing time required, this series was also recorded on Wednesdays (although broadcast on Fridays).[2] The 60th series returned to a studio, but with a reduced capacity audience split across the studio, another room and a virtual audience watching over the Internet, and the panellists shielded from each other by perspex screens.

On the subject of Victoria Coren. Did anyone notice she came up with an exceptionally good point about Liam Fox, and was dismissed and steamrollered by Ian Hislop. She made the point about the corruption of the arms industry, and the fact that weapons are sold abroad that are used against our own troops, and she asked why are they concerned with Liam Fox's relationship with a guy. Very sad.

I didnt see that happening at all. He obviously heard and listened to what she said. He was not dismissing her point. Did you expect him to go on and on and say isnt that terrible?
@DennisMoore664
@DennisMoore664 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go so far as dismissed and steamrolled, but I get what you are saying. Ian does nod along and briefly agree with the very serious problem Victoria is describing, but he's also trying to keep the show humorous and bring the conversation back to the topical corruption that was in the news at that point in time. All that being said, I have seen similar moments before happen on other episodes. Someone brings up a larger societal problem in relation to what's being talked about and the rest of the panel just leaves it be and moves on with the rest of the game. An example is when the media gets obsessive and catty about ladies fashion at a wedding and Victoria (I think) pointed out the double standard and how men aren't judged that way. There was a brief joke in agreement from Ian and everyone got back to making fun of the hats.
@kevinpitt2203
@kevinpitt2203 Жыл бұрын
@@DennisMoore664 To me the annoying thing about HIGNFY is that it is just superficial sneering. Satire can be great at cutting through to the heart of the matter and exposing the absurdity of a situation in a way that conventional current affairs programs cannot. I think my frustration is not only that they could have done a lot better, but they never even tried to make something of it, instead just going for the easy rather childish route. I suspect it is beyond them tbh. It is why I rarely watch it now.
@itsokay7989
@itsokay7989 Жыл бұрын
Because he was right and she didn't make a good point. There was no double standard or ignorance regarding arms trade, because it had absolutely nothing to do with the case of Fox paying for his butt buddy with tax money. She simply said something completely out of context.

Dubai isnt a bad place to visit for a few days in the winter. The "Arabs" show what they can do with a bit of money and Old Dubai recreates a lot of what it was like before oil wealth. But after a few days of shopping and shiny bars it's a little dull. A good idea is to visit nearby Oman which has retained a lot more of the culture of a real Arab country and where the Omanis actually work as taxi drivers and in other jobs where'd you not find Emiratis working, because Oman hasnt the oil wealth. Much better scenery than any other country of the Arabian Peninsula too!

I love this program; but, that animation of President Barack Obama is pretty much a racist caricature.

I know that Victoria is VERY smart, and I usually like her TV appearances, but she struck me as rather aloof, serious, condescending, and not so much into the humour and frivolity of this episode. Her smile seemed a bit frozen and, at times, insincere.

She's funnier than them! No, she didn't look like she was enjoying herself, and I don't really blame her - it used to be hilarious, but now it's mostly a rant, and she doesn't really do that.

Good God! Series 42 of this smug woke garbage, long long past it's cancel date, just like the BBC. And there's Graham, who was recently cancelled for defining a woman.

And you watched the whole thing. If you don't like a show, a movie or a television program you switch it off, or better still, don't switch it on. There are many, many programs I don't like so I don't even bother with them. I don't complain about them.

Core doesn't appear to be comfortable, mind you nor would I teamed with Hislop. He is such a smug, slimes character, and Private Eye suffered under him. Used to enjoy higny, but BBC has become so leftist and biased consequently as are the panel. No longer watch it nor BBC now. Should be defended.

@@CD-db1zo I love seeing women love a man for his intelligence. Victoria expressed her attraction for Jacob Rees-Morgue (!) after he made some clever crack. It's wonderful about this show and the English that two people on opposite sides of the political specturm can appreciate each others' intelligence and wit.
