Agreed! This anime literally changed my life 12 years ago, not only it made me become a full-blown anime/manga fan, but also re-sparked a huge interest in Japanese culture which eventually led to me getting a BA degree and living in Japan for a year. When I watched this opening, I literally felt like falling down a wormhole to 2006 and feeling all the same emotions as back then:)) Such a powerful anime indeed! I've been having the same kind of renaissance thanks to FMA: Brotherhood lately and I think it's high time to re-watch this HnG gem :)

It really was a powerful anime. I only watched it recently, but it has a feel to it that inspired me like no other anime did. I don't really understand why, but this anime really carved into my brain.

Imagine meeting a ghost. The ghost is a master of a hobby of yours. You use the ghosts abilities as your own just to win at whatever it is you're doing. But then you discover your own inner talent and passion for this hobby through the ghost that you used to cheat in the first place.

I've found this is one of the hardest anime to convince people to watch. It just doesn't sound like a good show no matter how you explain it. But it's soooo good! I'm not sure if there's an anime that digs deeper into the rawness of human emotions than this one does.

I never thought that of all the anime I've watched in my lifetime, the countless anime about combat, living life, and what it means to live, out of all the anime I've watched, this is the one that has impacted my life the most. As cool as something as Dragon Ball is, it never truly impacted my life, as mentally provocative as something like Death Note was, it didn't change my life. Hikaru no Go is a simple anime about a board game, working hard to become a master at your craft, despite that craft being something as mundane as a board game. I watched this anime 11 years ago, and Go has become a lifelong hobby of mine without me even knowing it. It always stuck with me, it's something that I just casually picked up for fun because of the anime, and I never let go of it. There were times where I stopped, but I always picked it back up. I'm no master of Go like Fujiwara no Sai, but it's something I love and I'm happy to continue playing.

The only issue I have with this anime is that I was never introduced to it early enough. But at least now I know that this is one of the best masterpieces of an anime there are. Everything in this show is perfect, and it’s truly great how well they portray the battles in the episodes. Will forever remain a Top 5 anime for me.

People forget that back when it was popular in the good old days of the mid 2000s. The anime/manga especially when released in the west greatly inspired a lot to play the game. I remember entering an old fashioned Go website to play against others. I could never understand how to play but the fact that good players never heard of the series...when asked 'how did you find Go?' and of course, Hikaru no Go. He did hear a lot of people say that, even wanted to watch it.

This is engraved in my top three anime of all time. I remember being a 10 year old kid watching the first 10 episodes dubbed online at Toonami Jetstream. Having no idea what it was but I was super intrigued. Eventually it got cut and the website kinda just fell off. About 5 years later when I was 15 I was all about streaming Naruto and Bleach, the big guns back in those days. But I remembered, it just crossed my mind that I never did see how this anime finished or even how it went. I watched the entire thing and I was in love once again. Flash forward 10 more years. A 25 year old man who still loves to come back once every year or two to re watch this absolute gem of a series. High quality, great dub voice cast and an amazing story with great characters. I love Hikaru no go :)

I agree that the first four measures have a powerful feeling to them. If that's in your interest, I highly recommend Hikaru no Go ending theme 1, as well as Hikaru no Go opening theme 2, and, perhaps, Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 ending theme 1 and Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 opening theme 1. In short, a lot of it probably has to do with the time period of Japanese music (at least in the anime scene). A lot of early Detective Conan openings/endings are spectacular as well (e.g. Two-Mix's Truth is amazing).

Heh. Back in Elementary school, my best friend introduced me to the manga before I was able to find the anime. I actually aspired to learn the game through the manga and the anime. We even held game times during recess after borrowing a board from one of the cool teachers there. That manga and this anime is a timestamp of one of my best times in my childhood.
