Many don't understand why you'd want to be, but a lot of those same people would understand if they watched this show. Your best bet? Don't be extra nice to those kinda girls. Just be mellow and normal. If they really like you.. You'll know it in how hard they try to "get you to like them". Well. That's just personal experience. I actually did this in school when I finished this anime. Never really had friends at all and by doing this I actually met someone I'm still with today 3 years later... This speech is beautiful for the reason that it is true, yet at the same time it is a flawed point of view. He thought Yui was being nice because it is in her nature to be, unable to see that her emotions and feelings are genuine. He has a snide view of the positivity Totsuka and the nerdy guy brings around him, and scowls at the sarcastic aid Yukino gives him because she honestly thinks he is hopeless. This was the Hachiman we all started with and his development from here has been a long and arduous emotional journey. Now look at him by the ending, the only ever heartbreaking thing was, Hachiman becoming happy yet at the cost of Yui experiencing genuine loss.

I am relatively new to anime and I tried watching this show on Crunchy Roll in 2021 but I dropped it after the episode where the pink-haired girl came to thank him for saving her dog and he just blew her off and used the stupid excuse of "She is nice because she wants something" and it really made him hate him because even though I can understand being a recluse, being a cynical jerk to others in that extent is just too much. I had no idea he actually undergoes an evolution and drops the cynical loner a-hole attitude, mainly because most other videos and comments about the show were usually just people praising and idealising his loner lifestyle. Also, maybe it's partly because my own teenage experience was different from those in Japan or the west as I was born and raised in Nigeria.
