Reading the comments here I think its fair to say this was your hike that got a lot of people inspired to pick up hiking. It sparked copy cats and a lot of viewers to follow in your steps. I think its the terrain in combination with the rural villages that at the time of your visit were free of any tourists. I absolutely love the Dolomites myself but these villages... I havent seen them there

Hey Kraig, I just wanted to drop by and say how much you've inspired me to start creating my own videos. Your content has been incredibly motivating and I'm truly grateful for that. By the way, if you enjoyed exploring Madeira and the Azores, I'd highly recommend considering a trip to the Canary Islands. I'm currently here, trekking through Tenerife and La Gomera, and it's absolutely breathtaking. Especially in the winter, it's a destination I'd recommend to everyone. Keep up the amazing work and looking forward to your next adventure! Cheers, Fridtjof

The bean stew is called fabada, made with faba beans and cured meats, red from all the paprika in the sausages. The sausage is chorizo, smoked if local to this area, you can buy it hot or sweet (not hot), but it's always smoky. Also very popular is the blue cheese, this area produces the best blue cheese in Spain, that's the reason for all the dairy goats you found. You were extremely lucky with the weather, some years there is snow in October, you were lucky that Summer was abnormally long and warm. There is a holy site nearby, during holy years there is more tourism around the are you started your trail. The shepherd dog had a collar because there are plenty of wolves in those mountains, also some brown bears, definitely something to consider if you're carrying food and sleeping in the lower areas. There are strict rules for camping within national parks, I agree some are absurd. You were lucky, fines are high. The day 3, where you call it boring is the Ruta del Cares and it's probably the most walked path in all of Picos, probably all of Spain. That's why it's paved and tunnelled. It's an easy hike.

Thanks a ton for this one, Kraig! Of all your hikes, *this* is the one I’ve always been most inspired by. I planned out a trip here not long after you originally posted, but it never ended up happening with the pandemic. This extra insight will be a huge help for my eventual visit there! I’m excited for it all over again!

Kraig, I believe you are not supposed to build cairns yourself. It's something to be left for the park rangers, as they can pick the correct spots and ensure that the rocks they move will not affect the soil or disrupt anything. It's also good LNT practice. Great hike btw, I spent a night at Collardo Jemoso as well - excellent place (and yes, lots of snoring)
