When I was young, I literally grew up playing in the woods every day, even during recess while at elementary school. As a younger adult, I backpacked and camped in a tent. Now that I am elderly, I camp in a class A motor home! It is all camping and I still love it just as much! Thanks for your channel! Campfire chats are great!

I've hiked all kinds of ways. I've backpacked and bike packed and when the kids were little, we had a big tent. Who cares? The important thing is, you enjoy nature. She's the greatest antidepressant! Now I cannot get out there due to 😞😞😞😔 joints, but the doctor promised me I will be hiking in a year. It's the only thing that keeps me going. Keep going with your videos. It doesn't matter how you enjoy mother nature, just enjoy! Thank you for all your wonderful videos!

So important to let someone know where you're going. I'm retired. When I head out if I know where I'm headed I let my son know. He works from home. But, I also leave Google Maps directions to where I'm going on my computer screen at home. Plus, I use location sharing with my son and wife. I'll add something to the weather info. If you're like me and you take a camera with you make sure you have rain protection for your equipment. Thanks for taking us along! Have a great weekend!

@@nancymann5351 Same here. I do photography. I'm considering video, but for now it's photography that I love. I have a rain cover for my backpack and had to use it recently while on the D and L walking out of Weisport toward Jim Thorpe. I had the forecast and was all set. The forecast was wrong!! I walked in a downpour for about 2.5 miles. Camera gear was safe. I was soaked, but it was fun.

Good advice, Cliff. Thank you. I found out the hard way that shoes are an important item. First time I hiked, I wore an old pair of Ked’s tennis shoes. I hiked with a group, a five mile hike to the top of a knob. I had to stop at a drugstore on the way home to purchase some ice packs for my feet! This event did not discourage me from continuing to hike. I invested in a good pair of hiking boots before the next hike!

I go by myself when I don't have (or want) someone to go with. Well, my little Yorkie goes with me but she's not a lot of help 😂. Sometimes you are your own best companion. Being on your own, not having to deal with someone else's schedule, moods or whatever, can be the most awesome and liberating thing you'll ever experience. Hiking and/or camping can very much be done solo. Cliff is an amazing example of that.

"It's just about enjoying the outdoors", and that my friend is the simple truth... And yes one more excellent point, and I really enjoyed this video - I like the fireside chat setup where I feel like (as the viewer) we are just sitting around a campfire and having a talk... But the one thing I will say is that the essence of hiking is walking, so if you are going to splurge a bit, do it on your shoes/boots, and that's my little personal opinion on that. Great video Cliff, hope to see you on the trail soon!

G'day Cliff, I liked this video. Your advice is solid in my opinion and in this day and age of INFLUENCERS who try to pass on tips for goods and ideas that benefit them is becoming a major pain. But it seems that you have a way of passing on what works for you and not forcing it on to others. You are an experienced outdoors person and I feel a number of your viewers would agree, you know what you're saying. Like everyone else, you had to start from scratch with hiking and camping....great job, bring on part 2.

Cliff great fireside chat as a person who wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail but before that could become a reality I had a major stroke as you know and my backpacking and camping mindset had to change to fit my circumstances. This is also a topic that I have often thought about and how to communicate it to others that watch when I am either Hammock Camping or stealth camping or a multiple Day Camp every camp in every situation takes planning on how where and what you need for that style of camp and not everybody's preferences will fit within a topic or style of camping it becomes very individual what works for one does not apply to the other every camp and backpacking trip is different. It's about what works for you in your abilities and disabilities but the whole purpose is to get out side and I enjoy the variety on your Channel and also your friendship

I am a hammock user. Have been on all my overnights. I will say it is not for everyone at all. Smaller to pack yes, even mone with the built in mosquito net and rain fly. But then for cold weather I need an underquilt and a 0° below bag. More equipment. Adds up to the weith of a 4 season tent + small bag

Cliff, I agree with you completely with everything you mentioned. I hike to enjoy nature and 'smell the roses' along the way. I always have olenty of water and snacks, as I have learned to refuel BEFORE I get hungry. I recently bought a top-of-the-line fanny pack, as my back does not tolerate a back pack very well. It is SO comfortable and fits like a glove; best one I've ever had! I have buddies to hike with occasionally on longer hikes, but am always careful when going out alone. There a lot of kooks out there these days. Thanks for sharing!!!

i think your videos are great.!!! the biggest thing i like about your videos is.... they are about enjoying NATURE.. most hiking videos seem to be a competition to see who can get to the end of the trail first. I wonder if those people actually enjoy the hike its self or if they are only concerned with beating everyone else. they MAIN reason i get out and hike , is to be by myself in nature and get away from society and all the BS associated with it. the second thing i see in most hiking videos, is they are always spending money on the newest gadgets. folks if you're just going out for a day hike, you don't need all that. it amazes me how these people can make something so simple into something so complicated. thanks' again.

Great tips Cliff thank you! As for reading product reviews, I sometimes am a bit skeptical about them as it can be people from competitor brands bashing a great product just so you go get similar elsewhere. Best thing is listening to your gut feelings. It's the angels speaking to you. They have never steered me wrong. And there are some people who leave bad reviews just to be nasty.

A few days ago i read a comment on Facebook about Bigfoot sightings and noises around Port Clinton on the AT. So since youre close to Port Clinton be aware of things. I know you are already, but be careful. You gave good advice basically be yourself. Personally I probably pack more than us needed, but I rather have it than not. And its only as long as I have room for it. Having a trailer i have quite a bit of room for things but I am always changing things around. Loved this video as always and miss camping. Safe travels.❤❤❤

I agree with you almost 100%. The only thing I kinda disagree on is you get what you pay for. That is true in some aspects but not all. I personally prefer military surplus. It's a little heavier to carry but it's almost indestructible. And although I have spent a gòd bit of money on it. I have a LOT of gear 😂. But at 62, chances are I will never need to replace much of it unless I abuse it. I hate the whole .ultra-light thing. I like my comfort, and if my pack weighs a little more, so what, I'm the one that has to carry it. No one else. I've seen a lot of those so-called pros, and when they start telling people how they are the ones that are right and others are wrong, I just delete them . I've seen a few of your videos, and I really like them, and I'm glad I subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work. Dwayne

I see that kind of stuff a lot! The only hiker pages I follow are yours and Taylor\Nahamsha Hiker. I would see comments under dang near every one of her videos taking shots at her for spending too many nights in hostels or hotels instead of camping. Or that she doesn't eat healthy enough on trail...Like, I'm sure literally every calorie she ate, got burnt right off. I did learn of a saying in peoples responses to those comments that could apply to every day life and not just hiking and that's "Hike your own hike." I thought that simple sentence was great advice to ANYONE!
