For my 50th birthday I had 2 options: a big party with everyone close to me or hiking alone with my girl in the mountains and staying in a cozy cabin. I chose the latter.
Unfortunately there wasn't much snow. In fact, those were the highest temperatures ever measured at that altitude in the Alps in early January. A real disaster. I hope it gets really cold again.
The Jungfrau region is one of the most beautiful areas in the Swiss Alps. But we also have to be honest: everything is 100% commercialized. You will look in vain for wild nature, there is infrastructure everywhere and everything costs money. The cable car stations are overcrowded, there are always long queues. At every corner there is equipment, ski wear, souvenirs and whatnot for sale. Anything that can't be monetized won't be done unless it somehow drives sales. The cow is milked until it drops.
In my opinion, Switzerland has long since passed the point of exploiting Alpine nature. There are no visitor limits, there are as many tourists everywhere as they come. Only a few make the "effort" of a hike, most come to ski and only use cable cars, ski lifts and chair lifts. Most of them look unfit and well-fed, but they have the most expensive and trendy ski clothes. That's not my thing.
Anyway, despite hardly any snow and too high temperatures, we had fun hiking a little there and also a little quiet hiking off the ski slopes because there is nobody there.
