Hiking into the Calavera Volcano San Diego, California. Join me for a Geology Lesson in the Field at Mt. Calavera Nature Preserve and learn about this unique volcanic feature in San Diego County. we will see an exposed throat of a volcano and spectacular and rare dacitic columnar joints. At this site I will walk you through the Law of Superposition, Cross-cutting relationships, and see a spot where we can see the 3 types of rocks next to each other, sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. So excited to have learned about this place. I would like to plug the Geologically Speaking Channel for introducing me to this site. Please check out their page. It has a lot of great information on geology in Southern California. www.youtube.com/@geologicallyspeaking

Hello again! Remeber me? I thought the ChinLee formation sounded pretty cool. Haha I have fished that lake many times and caught many very large Large mouth bass there. I have also been where you were standing inside the core. We knew it was a pit but had no idea it was an old volcanic plug. There was no signage 25 years ago. Thank you for taking me back and teaching me along the way. Cheers!

Hello again! Remember me? I thought the ChinLee formation sounded pretty cool. I have caught many large Large mouth bass out of that lake there. Also I have been to the spot you were standing in inside the core. I knew it was a pit but had no idea it was an ancient volcano core remnant. Thanks for educating me and taking me back to my old stomping grounds! Cheers

Great video! I'm not familiar with the literature on this volcano, but I wonder if the near-vertical orientation of the columnar joints indicates this may be more of a laccolith than a volcanic neck? Columnar joints form parallel to the direction of heat flow (perpendicular to isotherms), so I would expect a more radial pattern in a neck . . .

Interesting. Never thought about heat flow direction and the formation of columnar joints. A laccolith is a very interesting idea. Are columnar joints common in laccoliths? Appreciate the info.

I like your covering my CA in its extensive volcanic history. I haven't seen this place, so very looking forward to your visit today. I've only seen basaltic columns before, so the dacitic ones were very interesting! It seems, from weathering, they might be a slightly softer rock? (need to watch the rest of video to see what you say (sorry, lol - I do tend to comment as the video goes along - I do pause them a lot to do so). Thank you saw some new things - pretty cool!

Great question. I don’t think so, but you can check the local laws about collecting. Thanks for asking.

Why would the government build a dam on a fault ?

@@skyking1328 great question. It may no longer be active (not likely in Southern California), when they built it they did not consult a geologist, or they planned for a potential rupture. Not sure which. Thanks for the comment.
