We set out to hike Cliff & Redfield Adirondack High Peaks on an early October Sunday as we continue our quest to becoming ADK 46ers! The day was gray, windy, wet, and exhausting, but it was excellent all the same. We were able to get 17.1 miles of hiking done in 6 hours and 40 minutes ... that has to be a new speed record for us ... and we were tired afterwards!
This was our first official adventure for the Hike for Mental Health's annual #hikeOctober fundraiser. If you're interested in finding out more information, or you'd like to donate to the #hikeOctober efforts, please click the links below:

I hiked Redfield October 25th 2023 alongside Gray Peak Skylight and Haystack and I did all 4 of them in 6 hours of the 21 hour hike that I did that day during a 2 day stay at the John Brooks Lodge starting at the Calamity Brook Trail Redfield I’ve now done twice

Another High Peaks hike in the books - and this time, we logged those miles for a great cause! My personal goal is to raise $250 throughout the month of October to help fund Mental Health research and trail conservancy efforts through the Hike for Mental Health organization! I want to thank everyone who has already donated to my #hikeOctober fundraiser - you are awesome and appreciated!

Awesome. You should be at your goal now. If you see a fat guy in an orange T-shirt on the trail, please ask if he needs a snack. The life you save could be mine :)

I hate taking the suspension bridge. Did it the first time through, never again.

Some of the bridges on these trails definitely give me anxiety, and the dogs hate them LOL ... allbpart of the experience!

Another solid video. It's not a hike until someone falls/slips. Watching your videos brings back a lot of memories from when I completed the 46. Thanks for sharing your adventures. I did Cliff/Redfield on a 90+ degree day with Redfield being the 2nd peak. I'm pretty sure there were some swear words that were never heard before when I was going up Redfield. I have an instant classic picture of my flipping off the Redfield summit sign with double birds...lol

LOL - I wonder what people would think if they just happened upon us in a moment of frustrated exhaustion. Probably just a bunch of crazies in the woods ;)

The grey cold wet weather can suck the life out of anyone. Typically when I hit a wall I just focus on one foot in front of the next, or maybe focusing on the fact that home/car is “that” way 10 miles over 3 mountains...lol. But I’ve bailed on GRT 2x on basin due to exhaustion, once on Saddleback due to injury. But I still had to hike out! Insult to injury literally! I enjoy your videos!

There have been a few hikes where my brain wanted to shut down and "one foot in front of the next" was the only thing in my head ... thankfully that was enough to get back to the car! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the great video and hiking for the mental health cause. I completed my 46 in 2019, and Redfield was #45. I fully agree with you on your assessment of the mountain. It was the only one out of 46 where I was exhausted prior to reaching the summit, and it went through my head questioning how I'd make it back to the car. I am thinking it might be the rough trail terrain and longer than 1.2 miles that made it difficult. The Santanoni range in a single day was much easier, and probably more elevation gain.

Thanks for watching! Yea, that last 1.Forever miles from the junction to Redfield's summit was a huge mental drain. The entire rest if the day was awesome, so overall, I call it a win ;) The Santanonis, on the other hand, is a very interesting story that I'm hoping to share with everyone once the current situation is over and I can get together with a couple of friends to tell it ... it should be informative LOL

So, before Hurricane Floyd in 1999 there was a look one could do leaving up either mountain, going over through the col to the second and returning to Uphill lean to.. Hurricane Floyd caused a significant blowdown and I believe a few mud slides, and both trails to the summit had to be re cut, which explains both the extreme mud, and the rambling appearance of the heard paths. I orphaned Cliff at least 4 times before finally finishing on it's summit in the pouring rain.

I think that going from Redfield to Cliff through the col would have been awesome -- I prefer loops over out-and-backs whenever possible!

Most of my peaks were in that sort of weather in May and October which will take a toll on your attitude. I personally did not do many day bikes while pursuing the 46. I liked spending multiple days in the peaks so I would set up base camp and climb from that point and then maybe reposition for another peak later. Doing this made it so I wasn't doing 15 mile days, which helped me enjoy the experience more. I would try to do an overnight or two just to break up the hike. Just keep moving on brother! Great advice! We are planning a couple over nights next year to bang out a few peaks with less effort than 15-19 mile days ;) Thanks for watching!

I've never had the mud take a shoe completely off of my foot before. Thankfully Mark was there to help - even with him being able to get some leverage, getting the shoe unstuck took some serious effort. Thanks for watching!
