At 14,505 feet, California's Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the lower 48 states. I hiked up in the spring, when there's still snow, using the "Mountaineer's Route" over the course of 3 days and camping on the mountain. Hiked April 2018.

Man, I want to hike this so bad! Crazy how much snow is still there even during that time of year. Looks like views of the big mountains you see. Did you train a lot for this hike?

I wanted to do that this year but I missed the dates to get the permit for the mountaineers route and then I didn't get a permit in the lottery for the regular hiking trail. Great footage! Hoping to snag a permit for next year. Maybe when there isn't much snow, and we can rope up and rock climb. That drop off looked terrifying haha

Great stuff! Love Whitney and the whole John Muir Trail area. Only summited in the summer though. Did you sign the book by the stone hut so your name can be in the Smithsonian Museum for all perpetuity? lol Well done!

That is one extreme drought Whitney should have many feet of snow down to the trailhead not patchy snow on the upper slopes. great video.

Great vid bro! I just summited Whitney this July. Have you done it in the summer too? I’ve haven’t done any mountaineering yet so I’m wondering how much more difficulty it is. Think I’d like to give it a whirl

It’s sucks but some ppl like it. I did alot easier Mountains in Washington state and snow adds so many absolutely dangerous variables it’s not worth it unless you have a hiking buddy . You could fall in a tree well that suffocates you to death. You could slide off the mountain entirely because of the ice and snow even with proper gear. You have to have route finding skills because bad weather causes you to lose direction and the trail entirely

Awesome video. Do you know if this trail is visible during summer? I'm going in 2 days and I want to take this route.

I've only done it in the summer. The trail is quite visible, but not obvious, and marked with stone cairns. Unless you enjoy struggling with the snow and cold, I highly recommend doing this in late summer, preferably Sept. The only snow left is usually on the slope above Iceberg Lake, and on the "easy walkover" you saw at the end of the video. I took the rocky slope straight up to the notch to avoid the snow, but at the top of that is a loose, scree field that is awkward and difficult to pass. At the top of the notch is a choice of routes - you can risk the slippery snow covered slope of the walkover, or take the chute on the left, which is a class 3 climb, and often covered with snow and ice, though it was nearly melted when I climbed it. These 2 routes at the end of the climb are the riskiest parts.

Thanks for posting, great footage! You just answered my question which is "could I do this?" Way too steep for me. Looking to do a guided tour up Shasta via Avalanche gulch this summer- seems to be alot more user-friendly for a novice. Quick question if anyone sees this- does this Whitney moutaineering route follow "the Chute" route that folks use to skip the "99 Switchback" portion of the established trail, or is this a very different route? Reason I ask is that "the Chute" seemed to be less steep and a bit more doable. Or, is it the same path up? Thks

I hiked in 1994 Mt Whitney, it was the first and easiest 4000 m or 14000 ft peak I ever reached. On the mountaineers route. We did not have to cross icy or snowy fields. Just hiking upwards in July. My age was 16. My whole Family reached the summit, my Father was 50, my Mother 47, and my Sister was 15 and my Brother 13. Very easy hiking summit... I achieved Swiss summits afterwards which are not so easy to get on the Top.

Whitney has a bit more claim to fame than just CA’s tallest mountain. It’s the highest in the continental US only to be bested by those in Alaska if you’re talking the USA.

Only if you have some experience with snow/ice climbing and off-trail navigation should you really do the mountaineers route, the summer hiking route has strict permit requirements but is less technical. Grey's and Torey's peaks are also two awesome 14ers that are minimally technically if climbed during the summer.
