Recently I had the privilege to travel to Hawaii and spend 10 eventful days on the beautiful island of Maui. While on the island, I hiked the Waihee Ridge Trail in the West Maui Natural Area Reserve. This video chronicles that hike. Thank you for coming along with me. I hope you enjoy.

I remember hiking that trail back in 2000 - one of the most memorable hikes I've done - drank a full 2 gallons on our way to Eke crater, (end of the Waihee trail is about the halfway point - but the trail is seldom travelled and hard to follow after that) I refilled a third gallon with a filter while we slogged thru calf deep marsh for a good mile, barely keeping my boots on with each step as the ground attempted to swallow them up (it was dry or I was told it would have been been thigh deep). Got to see lots of green sword plants in bloom for the only time in my life and some of the most unique terrain I've ever traversed (the plateau reminded me of Alaskan Tundra as the water logged soil prevents plants from growing very tall) I had just started on my third gallon of water when I started getting muscle cramps with every step (electrolyte imbalance most likely) - started laughing at the ludicrous nature of the situation and wound up with a stitch in my side from laughing. Soon as we could see Eke crater we turned back (had planned to go to the summit about 4 miles further). Hope you get to hike From the summit of Haleakala out Kaupo Gap to the ocean while you are there - an amazing 20 miles of gorgeous vistas, if your knees are up to the constant downhill jarring over the 10,000 ft descent. So grateful for the many experiences God allowed while living in the islands for 38 years - and Maui, in particular is an amazing Island where the beauty of God's creation is on full display! Thanks for sharing this video and bringing to mind some wonderful memories from days gone by - much appreciated 🙂 -Tim

Great hike with constant views all around! Nice place for a convertible. Thanks for sharing! If you or others are on the Big Island, there’s a National Park and hike around the lava flows that’s pretty wild at night with flashlights and glowing lava. Park is open when flows are safe.
