In an early morning in January 2020, I set out to hike the highest peak in the City of L.A. The trailhead is located at Deukmejian Wilderness Park. I immediately came across a sign the read “Breathe.” It was the perfect welcome for this soon to be epic hike ahead.
At around 8am, I set out on the trail. This was the Mt. Lukens Loop Hike Trail. Since I was hiking in winter, there was frost all over the plants and even on the trail itself. The climb was very steep at first but it later mellowed out towards the peak. I cam across a fire road where I notice the first snow on my hike. I expected to be snow hiking here. But the weather was warm just before my hike and most of the snow melted. The views were getting better and better during my ascent. The antennas at the summit were also getting closer and closer. There were no false summits on this trail. The end was in view for almost the duration of the hike.
I finally made it to the summit where I found incredible vistas of both Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Mountains. There was even a bench here to relax and enjoy these views. This mountain seemed so underrated and I wondered why I haven’t heard much about this hike before. After eating lunch, I had to force myself to head back down the mountain. I just loved looking at the views from the summit. The second half of the loop was much more gradual but slightly more dangerous. This was really an awesome hike that more people in L.A. should check it out.
