The SalzAlpenSteig leads me through places steeped in history, where entire peoples came thousands of years ago to mine the "white gold" in the region around Chiemsee, Königssee and Hallstättersee. The salt deposits in the mountains have led to a flourishing cultural development, making the 230-kilometre hiking trail one of the most diverse in Bavaria. Each of my 13 stages has its own charm and impresses with its scenic diversity. Moorland areas and unique flora and fauna beckon in the lowlands, while the mountain hikes alternate between moderate and uphill stretches. Lush forests are interspersed with small clearings and seemingly endless panoramic views round off the hiking experience. Halfway through the tour, I take a two-day break in beautiful Berchtesgaden and visit Königsee, Obersee and the famous Röthbach Falls before continuing on to the Austrian part of the tour.
