I’m curious as to how much of an impact the narrow dimensions of the Grayl bottle have on boiling water. If you had to do ten boils of 500 ml in the Grayl water container versus something like a Toaks 700 ml pot using say a PocketRocket Deluxe stove, how much more fuel weight would you use with the Grayl? Stove model is less important - I’ll just assume percent efficiency lost will be constant.

@andymytys Big difference from my Toaks 550. As much as I like this filter and have become attached to it, I will most likely stop carrying it. Just too much weight for the singular purpose of filtering and the inefficient boil times. Will probably go back to BeFree or Sawyer and only filter the water I do not feel comfortable with for various reasons. But I still appreciate the innovation. Keep Smilin'

You have me thinking about a Grayl now. Surprised at that overgrowth - SHT usually prizes themselves on trail maintenance. Anyway couple of questions if you don’t mind. Do you carry any backup water filter with you or a second grayl filter?? I’m kinda new to this sport. Also do you carry a cnoc to hold more water while backpacking? I saw grayl now has a 24 oz version as well but concerned of that weight. Thanks so much for your awesome insights and videos. Hope that hip belt holds for you .

@Sandy-nl1eq As much as I love this Grayl filter, I know it's just too heavy for me to keep carrying it. Bought it originally to take out heavy metals on Florida Trail. No. I carry no backup. Have seldom carried a filter period for most of my life. My advice would be to go with a Sawyer or BeFree. Then, if you felt more comfortable having a backup, it would only be ounces. I do carry a CNOC water bag, but not for water. I have it filled with a protein powder mix I make to put in my water. I do carry a collapsible 1L water container if I need more capacity. The trail was in good shape in most areas. I think the wet spring did a lot of damage, and you can't make thimble berries stop growing. They are like Jack in the Beanstalk plants. Keep Smilin'
