Looks alot different than when I was there in 1968. We could drive right into town then or cross the old railroad trestle above town. Our group found a big gold nugget under a rail tie in the justice mine.

You amaze me. You are a hiking machine. Trying to figure out how you can do 20 miles in a day. I think the reason you are always hiking solo is nobody can keep up with you. I’m an old man now but back in the 70’s before you were born you could drive all the way to the town before the bridge and road were washed out I think in the early 80’s. The hike at that time was to Gothic Basin where the actually mining for gold was done. The miners left behind a lot of equipment like pumps and cables all discarded in the 0:02 stream. Enjoy your videos much. Bring back old memories. Thanks

They quit mining for two reasons. One they couldn't keep the railroad in one piece because of constant washouts and the other was the amount of arsenic in the ore.

I found the coolest swirly rock up at Monte Cristo, weighs about 20 pounds. I carried it all the way home, it's the centerpiece of my rock collection.

Most of the town was still there in 1968 but there was a mean old bastard that ran the town and wanted to charge us just for walking through it. The pelton wheel and generator were still in use then.

Think about and we pray that people will AGAIN pack in fish, to other more easily reached lakes. 🙏 Check with our fabulous Usda Wildlife and fishy dept. But don't mention Monte. It'sa kind of a shrine, of RESPECT , NOT a Disneyland, ima Logger and we need to LOG MORE NOW ❗ BUT not so much, just as WE ALWAYS USED TO DO, we always ❤had a little trouble with the politics, USDA/USFS, but much depends EVEN now on the Local Rangers, and QUIET Careful Government moves to BUILD ROAD, That is the key to safe and sound management that pays the CREWS, SKOOLS, [State timber, private, can trade, and keep lakes and attractions EVENLY accessible so as to not get librarians murdered. Funny, how people cannot figure out motives, when fish runs constantly are improving. Try the salmon in Lake Washington, or Sockeye that were never there in Lake wenachee, where Gates and Allen took out the only public boat dock, and privatized it like Clinton's administration did with Yosemite and others. ❤💛☺🙄🎣🚸🏰🤣🤠™️NOW DON'T GET US WONG TERN: The BIG BOYS NEED Their REST TIMES AND TOYS, their lives are just different. Wanna do their jobs? (well, yes, can we change a few things?🙄☺) And Law Enforcement and many Others NEED A BREAK, and a get-away 🙄❤🤣💛❤☺🚸🦝🛶©️🚜💼🏎🚜⛳🏎oops, sorry about that Green we just used our emotobozo disc plow, ...TERNed jnto a water Hazzard for Ted Turner and his VULCom Constr da USFS is what a lot of People who don't know the facts about timber and coal and water are really about.... ... want and ask government to do so it's nice for them. There are 2800 miles of just saltwater beaches in just Washington State.

I've read a less contaminated water source is beyond the township- a little more than a mile in a place called Sunday Flats. I'm assuming this is when you fork off towards Twin Lakes. Can anyone confirm where this better source of water is?

Good Lord, they make you WALK there now, and then the most outstanding buildings aren't there anymore? From what I see there's just a random collection of shacks left now. But of course I was there 60 years ago. The good stuff was still standing… historic buildings were much more interesting than the scattered remains you can visit now… why didn't the Park service keep it up? 🤦‍♀️😖🤦‍♀️ Are there no longer Office buildings and saloons etc. that you can go into? What a shame. Another piece of history lost…

Good video, but they were not old houses you had seen. Those are long gone. My cabin was the one with the signs. Not saying to say away, check it out all you want. It was built in 1926 for Garda Fogg, with remnants from the old town. If you ever see the door open, stop by!
