This was covered sooo wrong! She was on Hispanic magazine covers that could have gone to women that deserved it. She has received money because of who she claims to be. Take in mind that she has cultivated her persona for years. She just vacationed in Spain but claims that she moved to the US when she was 19. She makes a big deal that she speaks Spanish while not acknowledging that the majority of the country speaks Spanish because of immigrants. My family is Mexican. My mom is much lighter skin then I am and nobody has asked my mom if she is the nanny. I vacationed to the Bahamas as a child and I have never claimed that I was from there. I get that you can be in love with a country but come on. What she did is just wrong and disrespectful. Even Meghan McCain recognized that her responses were coming at the worst time when tensions are so high in the US.

Here's my two cents. I'm half-Latina, and I don't even speak Spanish, but that hasn't stopped people from being racist to me. I don't pass as white and I've been treated very differently from white people that live in my town, despite me having been born and raised into the exact same culture as them. Obviously being Latina is different from being Spanish, but she played up the Hispanic/minority angle with that story about being mistaken as her children's nanny. It seems like she's almost *trying* to appear as some sort of minority, like she's a brown Spanish woman or even a Latina. That's personally frustrating for me because if she wanted, she could speak in her normal accent and never be confused for a foreigner/minority. Yet actual foreigners and minorities *can't* just fake an English accent or pale skin. She can seem "exotic" to suit her own interests, but she doesn't have to carry any discrimination others might face, because it's essentially "removable". This all being said, I doubt she meant any harm. I don't think she needs to be vilified, but the feelings of people who are upset are 100% valid.

@compulsiverambler13522 жыл бұрын
What Geo and Tiffany said is true. Most US Americans are terrible at knowing when someone is imperfectly faking an Australian, Scottish or English accent. For example, most Americans don't notice that Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire is doing a bad Scottish accent, yet the writers had another character from England in the movie ask her what part of England she's from, which makes British audiences balk because it would never happen in real life, we know each other's accents. Geo and Tiffany trying to tell if Baldwin's accent is authentically Spanish would be like an American trying to tell if a Cockney English accent is authentic. They will probably know if it's REALLY bad, but most won't know if it's just slightly wrong, only another English person would.

Im a Third Culture Kid (TCK). American born in Japan to a Japanese mom and an African American dad, raised on an Air Force base outside of Tokyo for 9 years before moving back to the states. Sometimes people put you in a box (that isn’t totally correct), but you don’t have the energy to correct assumes. It’s complicated.

@ 10:39 I'm really upset with Nikki asking who cares. Then again nikki has also capitalized on being perceived as latina for roles 🙃. It matters because of white people trying to erase other cultures for centuries ! Now that they feel "oppressed" because other cultures are getting more attention they're taking it upon themselves to pretend to be something they're not. Side note: It's not the media twisting her words, she's contradicted herself so many times.

Nikki doesn’t get it and it’s also not in HER position to not see it as a problem, ESPECIALLY when Latina Magazine called her Latina and she 100% accepted it! Spanish ≠ Latina! She claimed to be latina, but she isn’t Spanish though, she’s WHITE, and it’s not hers to claim it, she grew up in BOSTON and her family is in Boston!! Even Alec Baldwin thinks she is from Spain, like why the fuck have the accent?!? And claim to be Latina & Spanish especially when she’s a basic white Bostonian

She lied about her heritage. Whatever her reason, she got backlash for it. She spoke with a fake Spanish accent, pretended not to know how to pronounce the word cucumber, told everyone she was Spanish, born and bred. That’s very different from exploring other cultures.

It's up to you if you're born somewhere you don't share ancestry with who you want to be, but it's not up to you if you fall in love with a place unless you move there (not your parents after you're grown). The only way this is okay (presenting as truly spanish) is if she has lots of her foundational memories of Spain. The accent is fine, being fond of spain is fine, not liking her crappy born name is fine, her whole fascination with it is fine since she does tell people she's from Boston, trying to use it for college isn't okay.

I think she just really got into the Spanish culture from a young age and has identity issues. Children from immigrant families face this all the time. I was born in the US but my parents are Hispanic, yet people here don't consider me American and people in Hispanic countries don't treat me like I'm hispanic. So we have to choose which culture we stand by most and its a weird problem that is hard to explain so sometimes we just say what we feel we are
