Definitely male, but females definitely get nervous. Especially new mothers. That's why they have nervous behavior like hiding/burying puppies (which can harm or delete the puppy), showing little to no interest in the litter, abandonment, ect. Pretty sure the male was nervous that Mama was near by. Dogs don't let males around the puppies till a certain age. Males fear the females for a reason. The females are more headstrong and confrontational, which makes them better guard dogs but need stricter training.

@BooBeez That may be true, as well, but I know that many mothers are protective of the puppies in the beginning, even against the biological father. As a result, he can be nervous when he is finally given a chance to inspect the puppies.

Yeah the females usually don't like any male dogs anywhere near their puppies. And I've seen a few that didn't want any human men around them either. I had a female pitbull years ago give birth to 9 pups and she would let anyone handle them, but she would watch you SO closely. Every move you made.
