I heard Hilary play this with the San Francisco orchestra several years ago, just after she’d recorded it for future release. Her interpretation is like no other violinist. The tempi are slightly slower than I’ve ever heard before...and it absolutely works!!! First time I’ve ever heard the inner voices of chording or such attention to small details of particular pressure on some notes. Most violinists just slop through the hard passages. Hahn takes her time and “explains” every passage with unmistaken clarity. She is a remarkable musician in every respect. .. THIS recording, by the way, is top notch by any standard. Superb all around.

I have loved Tchaikovsky violin concerto since I was perhaps 12 or 13. This was about 1954. I have heard it in records and live many many times, including a live performance in Christchurch New Zealand. I have never heard a nicer, sweeter, rendering of the first movement such as this one.. The violin of Hilary Hahn responds so nicely to the Russian soul of this work. The violin flies, sings, cries, with such perfection as to make me cry of enjoyment and nostalgia. The purity of her melody, the clarity and assurance of her phrasing, the warmness and delicacy of her sound, are magical, are perfect, are heavenly. I have loved Hahn since I heard in youtube, several years ago, a black and white video of her playing the partita 2 by Bach as a teen. I do not recall any rendering so technically perfect. She was 16. Now she is grown, she is in my eyes the best violin player alive, she is a miracle. Thanks Hillary for existing.

Reading the comments I know it is tempting to compare versions but it is a dead end. There have always been classic versions but the joy of this performance is it is fresh, lyrical and charming. The orchestra and soloist have a great rapport and hats off to Deutsche Grammophon as this is recorded brilliantly!
