I can’t imagine how perfectly they captured all of Salome’s emotional beats and all of the horror and terror in the music, the orchestral clarity is unbelievable

Leonard Bernstein said to the old Karajsn (both met ech other in Vienna - artist room) that this was the best Salome recording he ever heard. The orchestra was great and Behrens for sure also. But Bernsteins mentor Mitropolous and Solti made also great recordings, and for sure the closing scene is great with Fritz Reiner and Ljuba Welitsch. Karajan could handle the orchestra unbelievable. He could conduct Strauss, Wagner and Verdi operas on the highest highest level, who else could do this also? I remind only Solti and Toscanini (no Strauss opera).

Incredible. Totally incredible. When I hear something at this level, I am silently saying a big "thank you" to these artists: the composer, the singers and the conductor who gave us this wonderful present.

In the months before I went off to study composition at the university, this was one of the main elements of my regular listening. I had purchased the 2-LP set at a record store, and was completely *astonished* not only at Strauss' music, but Hildegard Behrens complete command of the part along with Karajan's mastery of the orchestra. Behrens later went on to become my very favorite Marie in 'Wozzeck' under Abbado, as well as a wonderful Brunnhilde. What a great artist!

Pour moi la meilleure scène finale, une Beherens hallucinée et hallucinante dans une partition inchantable. pas une fausse note, tempi parfaits. J'adore.

Behrens was an amazing singer and actress. I read somewhere where that this recording of the final scene was done in one take. Remarkable.

I've never been the biggest fan of Behrens, but I've always felt that Salome and Marie in Wozzeck were her best roles. I saw her do Marie is SF.

Besides being a great conductor, Von Karajan was a master of technical aspects of recordings. He draws a magnificent performance from Behrens. VK's discography reveals his technical skills to the fullest. A great musician, but a very flawed human whose politics were abhorrent.

Karajan was apolitical. His involvment with the Nazis, like that of Schwarzkopf, Clemens Krauss and others, was purely opportunistic, in order to advance his career. Some artists, like Tiana Lemnitz, Hans Pfitzner, Karl Böhm and Gottlob Frick, were 'true believers'. Karajan was not one of these.
