I have a R/D longbow built by Bill Griffith at Zona Bows. It was a gift from my son. It didn't take long to discover the root of his generosity. Turns out neither one of us could hit anything with it. We were both recurve shooters and it's like you said, longbows are a different critter. So she hated me and I hated her. Thing is, I couldn't give her up. I kept at it, and one afternoon in the backyard, something just clicked. The groups tightened all the way out to 30 yds. Now both my Shakespeare RH400's are mad at me, my Ben Pearson Signature barely speaks,, and the Bears left months ago. I've often toyed with the idea of trying a Hill style bow, but I'm one bow away from a divorce so I better quit while I'm ahead. Thanks for all your wisdom and hard work. Just found your channel and subbed.

I have been shooting HH Longbows since 1990 and loving it! One deer season on opening day I carried a 54" recurve, but day 2 I carried a 66" Howard Hill bow. Strange as it may seem, carrying that straight limb longbow in the woods caused me to feel much more in tune with the woods, much more a part of it.

@@robertcarte95 I like the medium notched universal grip with flat on the forward side so I can still go full grip and not a modified full grip the way I have to with recurves as I have small hands that most straight grips that are not the rounded English Longbow style that some flatbows have that my hands do not fit due to either being skinny enough but too deep like a Howard Hill style grip or shallow enough but too wide like a Pope and Young style grip, the two different styles of ASL made first famous by these three archers.

For decades I bought and shot compounds and recurves that all had mid to high wrist grips. But then, i started making selfbows. Then i realized, I was meant to shoot low or flat grip bows, with hand as close to arrow as possible. Didn't know what I was missing, for 35 years.

Howard Hill Archery has produced Great Bows for many years and still does. My favorite is a 66 inch Wesley Special with 5 laminations of "Lamboo." (Laminated Bamboo) That limb core provides the fastest recovering limb core of any wood. Match that with a Cocobolo riser and you have paired the best limb core with the best heavy riser wood. 👍

Howard Hill as well as brand Pope and Young who studied Ishi made the modern flat limb, flat handle longbows famous. I love the slightly newer notched grip due in part to hand size as some bows like the Howard Hill style are skinny enough but really deep for my small hands and the Pope and Young style bows are right depth but often too wide for my small hands so a medium universal notch/locator with flat front is what I like so I can use a full grip with a bonus that I can be more consistent with where on the bow I can grip. It is the type of bow grip Jon Lee liked to make for people who asked for a notch grip only his looked more like a small/mini locator then a notch grip from the pictures I have seen on those bows. I plan to use for hunting a bow the Youth Longbow from GREAT PLAINS TRADITIONAL BOW COMPANY in hickory with bamboo and a middle piece of carbon fiber more for linb twist in left for eye dominance at 45 pounds due to needing a 24.5--25 inch draw that an adult can call an American Style Shortbow since the bow is 52 inches and I call the bow this because it is shorter then the 56/55 inches I have seen for American Style Longbows (ASL) that have the mini to mild reflex deflex but not a true reflex deflex bow that is not the world 3D definition of a longbow. I might need to get the bow I have and put some barebow type weight to it using a Great Northern Bowfishing (/stabilizer) Gadget Adapter so I am not wobbling left and right as much due to how light the bow is.
@larryreese6146
@larryreese6146 9 ай бұрын
I love the Hill style bows too. But I've never shot one without a certain amount of deflex that didn't have a certain amount of hand shock. According to what I've read that translates to wasted energy that should have been being transfered to the arrow. I still love them though.

I have watched a lot of your videos, and always loved watching them and usually learn something new. I do have one question for you. In this video, at the beginning, I noticed that you had maybe as much as 8 to 12 inches of arrow still sticking out past your riser, when you released the shot. Do you always shoot overly long arrows? Do you end up there, just to get the tune and weight you want, with heavier spine or do you do it, because you prefer the longer arrow for aiming reasons? Just curious, or maybe you could do a video addressing your preference for arrow length.

That's how I measure my draw length. It's 25.5. I think if a lot of people measured their draw there would be some surprised folks like me. Ii draw under my eye if I pulled behind my jaw like some it would be longer.
