Thanks so much for sharing such detailed tips and advice! The quality of your videos is solid, I can't imagine how much effort you put into all your vids (not to mention how you even balance this and your studies) I've joined this year and already submitted my application but I watched your entire video and read your blog post anyway lol Joining BJC has definitely been an interesting experience, my only regret is that I'll be too old to join again next year and actually apply all your advice.

Hello Hillary! At 07:50, you told us not to choose controversial topics. Is this your subjective opinion? I couldn't find any information about whether we should or should not pick such topics on the Breakthrough website or judging criteria. The reason why I am asking this question is because topics that are usually covered in advanced college math may not have any scientific evidence.

I have a question!!! Do you have to produce every single bit of content in your video yourself? Like, if I'm doing something about life science and I am talking about a wolf and want an image of it in my video, do I have to take this photo myself? Or can I use someone else's photo with permission? It seems very unrealistic...

what category does Paleomagnetism fall into: Physics, Life Sciences, Mathematics and COVID-19?
@faiyazmahmudnirob50024 жыл бұрын
Paleomagnetism is the study of the record of the Earth's magnetic field in rocks, sediment, or archeological materials. Magnetic minerals in rocks can lock-in a record of the direction and intensity of the magnetic field when they form. Paleomagnetism is the branch of geophysics concerned with the magnetism in rocks that was induced by the earth's magnetic field at the time of their formation.

I have a question! If you win, you are required to go to the ceremony to accept the prize but it doesn’t mention if flight and hotel are included. If you win do you have to pay for the flight? What if you can’t afford the flight it takes to get there? What happens if you can’t get the prize in person, do you forfeit the prize?
@j100014 жыл бұрын
Great question! I don’t know the details for BJC, but usually with this kind of thing sponsoring organizations pay for travel expenses (flights, hotels, food, etc) for you and any other people who are supposed to attend (your teacher, perhaps one or both parents). This is routine stuff for most professional organizations; they have plenty of money for travel costs.

your audience retention curves are up to June 9 2019, so that's not a valid point to make on that data alone…
@HillaryDianeAndales5 жыл бұрын
I only showed it to demonstrate that audience retention curves ALWAYS drop off towards the end. They vary only on how they drop. I showed the curves up to June 9, 2019 because data made from October to December 2017 (competition period) do not capture *true* audience engagement. I figured that in the Oct-Dec 2017 interval, the people watching were most likely those involved in the competition, e.g. participants, judges, teachers. They were likely to watch my video until the end even if they didn't want to anymore because they only wanted to assess my entry, compare my entry against theirs, etc. That would account for probably 10K views. By January 2018, the views ballooned to 800K because the public started watching it. At this point, the curve could capture *true* engagement because the viewers (general public) had no reason to stay in my video other than they liked it. So by including all views from time of upload (Oct 2017) until now, I could get a more accurate representation of audience retention. (I probably should've set the interval from Jan 2018 to Present but well I was rushing to upload 😂) Challenge participants now will never be able to use their OWN curves to guide them because they'll have submitted their entries by the time the curves are even available to view. Because of that, I figured that maybe I could just show them mine so they can speculate about which video elements make the curve steady or steeply sloping down--just so they have some semblance of a guide. I hope that clears it up a bit (?) although I'm not completely sure what you mean about the invalidity regarding the June 2019 date. I would love to hear from you about this though 😅 perhaps I missed something in my reasoning.
@cplnerf5 жыл бұрын
@@HillaryDianeAndales ahhh so you're taking total audience engagement as a proxy for popular vote engagement. thank you for the long response. Also do you mind if I email you or something? I'd like your advice on something. I just @'d you on twitter "pm" (pm me back)
