No need to apologize for the “early” reaction! The sooner, the better for me! It’s your channel, and if someone doesn’t like it they can always wait and watch it at their leisure. I am so glad you’re back at reacting. Voice Play is one of my favorite A Capella groups, along with Home Free! This was a phenomenal video! I love that they are the theatrical A Capella group! They really go all in with the costumes and makeup! I thought the song sounded familiar, but it’s been so long since I’ve seen the earlier Pirates of the Caribbean movies so I forgot. Speaking of Home Free, they dropped a new cover yesterday. It’s “God Bless the Broken Road” and it’s amazing! Hope to see you react to it when you get a chance!

No apologies needed for lack of pauses. This particular song is a reactor-killer. It's so powerful, so well arranged, they all sung their *faces* off- it's kind of an accomplishment that you remembered to breathe through all the shifts in dynamics. So yeah, your face said it all, really. And we get it. We feel the same way. It's very hard to find words to express what was just experienced, especially right after the fact. This one takes time to absorb (and to recover from the shock!).

Dude, there isn't a weak member in the group, even their featured guest singers. Eli is easy to overlook sometimes because he's the "utility singer" who can be put anywhere in the arrangement to support whoever is in the lead, but even then, he is never giving a weak performance. He's an amazingly flexible powerhouse who knows when to power in and when to hold back. I'm really happy with our new Mr. De La Rosa. I think he's a great addition to the group, and like they said on his welcome video, he's very much on-brand for the group (though, I disagree that it is a brand of "dumb" like they put it :P). They just constantly have fun, and their emotional investment in the piece carries through the video and it's hard not to be right there with them as they're having a complete blast.

The one thing I really have noticed recently when I started looking at who arranges the song is that when Geoff does it, everyone is given a moment or section to shine in, and his parts seem to be more humble (comparatively). For example, Geoff did the composition for this: Layne got to sing (excellent baritone harmony with Geoff with the Yo-Hos), a strinking beat box part to boot. Cesar's parts were clear and perfect for his voice, Eli got to belt and Jose acting the part of the captain and getting his solo and support parts were brilliant. Compare that to Layne's arrangement of My Mother Told me--- Still a great song, Beatbox was great. But J-None and Jose weren't really utilized IMO besides background voices. Eli got his belts, but Layne put the Geoff Subharmonics in 3 times in the first verse, gave Geoff a Bass Drop and a whole solo... Layne was also the brain child behind the E1 Sub at the end of Oogie Boogie as well... He tends to wield Geoff's shock value as a swinging hammer as opposed to bringing out the best in the song surgically with everyone's greatness. Again, don't get me wrong, Layne writes awesome songs, it's really the only critique I can give. I think Geoff is too humble to write himself doing all of that in anything he arranges for Voiceplay, because he knows it's not all about him. Plus he has his own channel, so if he wants to show off he does it there. (If you haven't seen it, House of the Rising Son came out a couple weeks ago by Geoff!) IMO, this song may be the poster for what the Cesar/Eli/Layne/Geoff era of Voiceplay will be... if this is the beginning, I can't wait for more!
@samuelmncedisi10653 жыл бұрын
Can't say I completely agree with you. Geoff has arranged songs where he opened/lead the song i.e Can't Help Falling In love, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The reason why it may come across as if Layne utilizes Geoff a lot more in his arrangements, is that the songs lend themselves to bass singers i.e Oogie Boogie Song, You A Mean One Mr Grinch, If I Were A Rich Man/Girl (even though the song was well balanced). Layne has arranged songs like Carry On My Wayward Son (Eli also contributed to the arrangement), Warrior, This Is Halloween, What's This, Moana Medley and the Little Mermaid Medley, that aren't bass heavy. The cover, My Mother Told Me, uses a lot less lower notes than this song - the difference is that the former is in your face about it. The original song by the composer Jesper Kyd and co, off of the AC Vahalla soundtrack of My Mother Told Me, is a lot more grittier and darker (Tomi P's cover version of it closely resembles it), whereas Laynes is a lot less, while he still maintains the essence of the song. Hoist Your Colours really works well because the tenors and baritone set the tone of the song making it eerie, while the bass adds texture, contrast and darkens the song (when needed) but also along with the percussion, maintain the rhythm and beat going throughout the song. To me, the harmonies are what made this song amazing, and I completely disagree with those who say the bass is what carried the song. That might be why Geoff opted to arrange for and sing with the group, instead of making it a solo project.
@DarthKoonstyle3 жыл бұрын
@@samuelmncedisi1065 definitely agree that the bass didn't carry this. Imo this may have been one of the most balanced songs overall, which I think lends to it's greatness. I guess my thoughts were based off of more recent arrangements. Wasn't really paying attention to who arranged prior to six or so months ago. Thank you for bringing up these points, will go back with an open mind and revaluate. Thank you for adding your perspective. Have a great day!
