Recently bought second hand Akto to compare to my lovely UNNA tent. I did take Akto to test it and left Unna at home. I loved the smaller pack size of Unna and smaller weight comparing to UNNA. I did put Akto with it's pole and pegs in dry bag and attached it to front of my steering/handlebar of my road bicycle. When you say it's difficult to open front/rear ventilation from inside, I can say it's not a problem for me. I'm 6'0 or 183cm. I did not try to open ventilation on head side (right side of the tent) but I easily can reach and open left side ventilation. All you have to do is open the inner zip and reach out to the bottom of tent. It's so easy, no problem at all. I used AKTO for London-Paris-Diepe cycling trip. I like the lightweight of Akto and the massive porch. The porch would take 2 classic Ortlieb panniers and another 2 bags. It still would have space to keep my trainers there and helmet. Inner tent has plenty of space too. It is EASY to pitch, some say it isn't easy to get taut but if you do it correctly it comes easy. Although I always could find even ground. At one point I wished I had SELF STANDING UNNA because it was difficult to drive tent pegs into the stony ground. Really difficult. If it would rain it would not be a pleasant experience. Especially the 4 Akto base corner pegs can't be moved much, but an excellent advise was to add short paracord to metal ring. In this case it would give you extra distance to get peg in that hard ground. In rainy hard ground conditions I love to have Unna, it's so easy to pitch and doesn't require any pegs if it's not windy. I could not sit up in Akto without head touching ceiling, when my Big Agnes rapid SL mat would be inflated, but it would not bother me. I mostly would make a quick dinner and go to sleep. Sometimes I found myself sitting inside inner on very edge so I could keep my head outside of inner. In that case it would not touch ceiling. Akto did not feel claustrophobic, it's spacious, yellow and felt rather nice inside.

Almost purchased the Akto a few years back and I regret not buying a Hilleberg tent. My tents, a 2P and 1P, are almost twenty years old and have been out of production for some time. My tents see 3 season use in the mountainous regions of the southwestern and western U.S. Your subscribers are very experienced and offered helpful comments. Thank you for the review.

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNAGood question as it was a doubt when I bought it. But I don't miss a vestibule at all. 1) There is some space at the entrance side between the inner and the outer for wet shoes and other small items. 2) I prefer not to cook in the tent at all. But like yours; you can partially unclip the inner tent and so create some inner space. It works great for dry entries and leaving when it rains. 3) In change of not having a real vestibule, the inner tent offers a lot of space. I can easily store all my equipement inside. 4) This one is more personal. I travel with a sea kayak, which I always put right next to my tent. Wet clothes, food storage and other stuff I can leave in the kayak. Thanks for asking, best regards!
@kristaps2010
@kristaps2010 Жыл бұрын
I agree with kayasper. Unna has a tiny line of vestibule where I would put my wet shoes and small bag. The really massive 110 liter bag would come inside tent with me and would stay next to me. I like it that way so I can easily access everything I need. I rarely did unclip corner of the inner tent to make more space but I did it once. It created a lot of space. When I cook I do cook in UNNA's vestibule. I sit inside inner tent what is unzipped completely. Sometimes I pull the optional ground sheet towards inner tent and drag a tent peg in the ground to prevent ground sheet moving back to it's original position. Believe me it does create big kitchen area and I am shielded from elements as I'm sitting inside the tent under the roof of outer tent.

@@kristaps2010 Nice to hear we share opinion. By the way, on my last trip (112 days alone) I DID cook regulary inside the tent due to the many rainy days. For that, I unclipped more or less the half of the inner tent, put the stove under the outer, while leaving a gap open for ventilation. It worked perfect. For longer trips on my own, I still can't imagine a better tent than the Unna, I love that thing!

I purchased my Akto last year, and I backpack around the US all year round - so it's used almost everyday. One thing I carry that many don't is a tarp. Adds weight, but worth the protection from rain and snow. I like to be able to open the fly without getting wet. So this helps me. I agree, to be able to access the ends with zipper/mesh would be a great modification to this tent. Anyway, as always a great and honest review by Matti. I trust both Matti and Stina's reviews since they actually use the equipment and not necessarily funded by the manufacturers. 😊

Lovely review Matti! AKTO is one of my favorites hardiest one-person tents. Lightweight, without sacrificing durability, 4seasons tent for the Nordics. A superb space compact living for my 70 inches (AKTO just about fits my 78 inches husband). Our both favourite however is Hilleberg JANNU a nice 1-2person tent great for mountaineering, skiing, kayaking and so on Nordic outdoors.

Thank you for your measured and objective review on this excellent tent. Subscribed. Your review has confirmed that this will be far too small for my intended usage, so I should look at 2 person tents from now on. Only Hilleberg tents though as I'm really appreciating how this company constructs very high quality tents, and once experienced with very high quality equipment you only want that level for all your gear (surely it can't be just me that thinks this way!).

Akto was my favorite tent from 1995 to 2009 when I upgraded to Nallo2, and then later Soulo and other models.I think it lasted for 13 years of heavy use until the outer tent started to crack up severely bacause of I guess sunlight exposure over the years. But it was made from Kerlon 1800 back in the days so it was better. And the bottom in the inner tent was water proof all until the end, that is incredibly good. I loved the Akto tent, but today as a relatively old man I find it to small, especially the height inside, You can't sit up comfortably and in heavy rainy weather You have the tent wall approxiamtely 5-10cm from Your head and that is fun for a while in life but You start to want a little more comfort as years go by.. Today I would not use Akto for longer trips.

For the same weight the Robens Starlight is VERY simular to this tent, although I think the Starlight looks easier to pitch with no concern with inner and outer touching and more ventilation as well as ventilation you can adjust from inside. I spent 3 weeks in Scottish autumn in a Starlight and it was great, even when everything was soaking wet the inside of the tent was always dry and I could get some kit dry over night. The Starlight door does drip if it's wet outside where as this has something above the door which would stop that from happening. (I'd already cooked breakfast and packed down into waterproofs before I opened the door each morning so it wasn't a big deal for me. Just an idea for anyone looking at this tent design

I agree with every word you said! - Except - i had to pay almost the new price for mine during lockdown (it was in super almost unused condition) but i am very happy with it. it is expensive, but many people buy a cheaper tent, then later buy a better one, so no money is saved, and you now have two tents, neither is as good as the akto, but your money saved is now wasted.

Problem with the soulo is it's basically the same weight as the a nallo 2 or anjan ft which have far more room and just as storm worthy. Main benefit of the soulo for me is that it's freestanding and can be pitched in tight spots. If that isn't a concern then I'd almost always take the larger tunnel tent

@@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA My experience with the Enan has caused me to do two things. #1 - I added two additional guyout lines at the foot end & the head end. They are very helpful in keeping the outer tent taut. #2 - I normally put a small flat rock under each of the 2 fiberglass poles to keep them from sinking into soft ground. Without the base support under each fiberglass pole they sink into the ground when it's gusty windy or when the soil is wet from rain & the outer tent loses some of its tautness & I have to tighten the guyout lines all around. Check those fiberglass poles, you'll discover they settle down into the ground.

The Akto doesn't get more hot inside in sunny weather than other tents due to the very good ventilation in my experience. I have used Akto since 1995(my first one lasted for 13 years of heavy use). But today as a middle aged man with a little more back pain(and a stiffer body) than I used to have in the younger years I prefer more roomy tents than the Akto. But I have slept in Akto in extremely tough weather, fried fish and made all kinds of food on multifuel stoves in the vestibule( with the door closed) in tough rainy weather, and it was never any problems with it and I felt completely safe in there. I really loved the Akto tent.

Thanks for this excellent review! I was thinking of getting the lighter weight Enan but I have just realised that it may have less usable space than the Akto because it has triangle ends whereas the Akto has rectangle ends which hold the side walls and ceiling further out (and more tight). And also Enan not so nice to live in when raining as the door does not have a vent cap. Do you find that the Akto is a little more spacious? Does the rain come into the Enan with top of door open? I am leaning towards the Enan and in your review of the Akto you mentioned that it is suitable with one or two dogs and I was wondering if you can keep one dog inside the tent if not how do the dogs handle the mosquitos? I have a Bavarian scent hound and it is a mid size dog and I prefer to have the dog sleeping next to me inside the inner tent. Do you think the Enan will have room for both me and my dog? Greetings from Sjuhärad

I use my Enan and my Akto and have my small border collie with me. Stina used the Soulo (same size as Enan) with her little bit bigger border collie in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6KTmIyCf8Sgfc0 /Matti in Jokkmokk

Great information! I'm looking for a 2 person tent..maybe that Jannu that was mentioned earlier is the one 😎👉👉 I think Fjällräven is just too expensive when there are other perfectly good tents for half the price.

I Think Hilleberg is lots of money BUT it's also lots of quality and good details. Then you have som brands that try to be expensive but they don't catch up with quality if you compare with Hilleberg. Then it's better to acctually go for a tent that is really lower price than Hilleberg. ...but the quality will be lower than Hilleberg. /Matti

how about condensation?
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA 3 жыл бұрын
Yes... there is always condensation in tents when the outdoor temp is lower than the indoor tent. With this tent it's possible to keep a good airflow through the whole tent! You have good ventilation in the both lower ends. If you keep them open and point one of this shorter sides towards the wind you will get the airflow. This keep the inner temp the same as the outside temp and then... no condensation! In additional ventilation you have the small ventilation above the door. This is perfect when you are cooking inside the vestibule. But I also keep this ventilation open as much as possible. There is always situations when you get condensation but Hilleberg Akto is one of the better probably. /Matti

It's not expensive... It's a lot of money. My old Akto I bought second hand and used it for 10-15 years and then sold it and get some money back. I changed to a new only because of this small 'hat' over the entre. It was still going strong! ...but I agree... It's a lot of money! / Matti

You'd be off with a tarptent scarp so much better than the akto and half the price ! I used to swear by hillebergs but the prices have gone so silly just for basically material sewn together . I'd still be a lover of them but after having several hillebergs I can't afford them no more , wanted my.dream tent so my growing family can come out . But £2100 is ridiculous🙄 come on hilleberg lower the prices down so ordinary working people can have one . 3 years ago my nallo gt2 cost £650 now there £980 plus . Just greedy we should stop buying hillebergs for a few years until there forced to lower the price or go out of business , which I don't want to see , simply lower the prices back down where they used to be instead of just thinking about the profits

It's sad that it's a lot of money. Hopefully Hilleberg can guaranties that they don't use children workers and that they try to make everything as environment carefully as possible... Lots of cheap stuff is from Asia and we know that the pollution of nature is bad and the labor laws is not so good... But it's still a lot of money to get a Hilleberg. Have you checked the second hand market? / Matti

I wouldn't want a second hand one, and after China spreading this deadly disease I don't buy anything from that part of the world, we need to start manufacturing our goods in Europe . Keep safe and hopefully hilleberg will listen and take action if the word is spread

I agree with Hilleberg's pricing policy. People are so use to Chinese manufactured goods. Hilleberg's refuse to allow other companies to oversee production of their product. They will repair a tent that's 30 years old. Sure you may have to pay for repairs, but I'd rather do that knowing the ten't quality will never be second to quantity. I will get the Staika and Niak for my trips in Asia and Africa.

All but my very first Hilleberg tent I got second-hand. Some second hand tents have been hardly used and were already 30% cheaper, others had some wear and tear which I could get repaired. My oldest, a first generation Nallo, is almost 30 years old now and is still useable and did survive many a hard storm!

I think you get condensation issues in all tents when the temperature drops or when you get snow/rain on the tent (=temperature drops on the surface of the fabric). This Hilleberg Akto is good because there is a good ventilation in this tent. You just need some wind and keep all ventilation open. /Matti

I don´t experience any trouble with that either. I am a very happy user of the one person Hilleberg Unna. If there would be such a thing as you refer to, I suspect it would even have more disadvanteges than anything else. However, another way to tackle it, is to open the door only with the upper zipper. That creates an entrance large enough to step in/out, even without stressing the fabric.
