Hillsdale College Christ Chapel

Hillsdale College is committed, by its Articles of Association, to provide “sound learning” of the kind needed to maintain “civil and religious liberty,” as well as “to teach by precept and example the essentials of the Christian faith.” In keeping with the latter, the College is building a grand and beautiful chapel, to be named Christ Chapel, in the heart of its campus.

When we visited last year for my son's on campus interview the 1st place he wanted to go was Christv Chappel. I knew why the moment I entered. Mr and Mrs. Babbitt, thank you for investing in these young people putting a beautuful place worship so central to student comings and goings. I'm grateful.

Beautiful. Faith and Reason, true, but in addition to these two, as with the often unseen presence of the Holy Ghost in Scripture (as his is to glorify the Father and the Son versus himself, thereby indirectly glorified), the too often unrecognized third component of knowing is his grace gifts (e.g. Romans 11:29 charismata and 1 Corinthians 14:1 pneumatika), the divine source for faith and reason that also goes as far beyond them as he himself is, being omnipotent and omnipresent. As a reformed charismatic (continuationist versus cessationist) Christian I often find these camps sadly lacking that trifold balance of Biblical understanding that so wonderfully undergirded the ministries of Christ and his elect apostles overflowing on their disciples. Soli Deo gloria! Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

A multi-denominational chapel is certainly a rare experiment that demands a love for truth and our neighbor. At about a minute into this Christ Chapel fundraising video, the principal donors ask an odd question: 'Where are Hillsdale students worshiping? Where are they going to church?' An honest and 'intelligent piety' would have answered that question: St. Anthony's Catholic Church. College Baptist. St. Paul's Lutheran. Holy Ascension Orthodox. And in many other congregations in the local community, with and among the townies. This is, of course, meet, right, and salutary. Heaven forbid that Hillsdale students would merely shuffle about in the cold and at times indifferent hallways of 'mere Christianity.' The Weight of Glory compels us to pray for students and to encourage them to seek out a room, to seek truth, catholicity, and orthodoxy. And such a room woud lead them off campus and into the local community. C.S. Lewis: "You must keep on praying for light: and, of course, even in the hall, you must begin trying to obey the rules which are common to the whole house. And above all you must be asking which door is the true one; not which pleases you best by its paint and paneling."
