We will have to do that trip to Hawthorne soon. The Flying M Ranch was what it was called before the Hiltons bought it. They kept the name because Barrons wife's name started with M. I think Mary? Barron also donated the money to build the Catholic Church's community room in Yerington. A plaque on the wall there gives the information and maybe the date. Those orange balls are to show pilots where power wires are. Safety. My dad's mother's ( my Grammy) side are in the family tree of General Phil Sheridans. Interesting about cookies. Ill have to cook more bread ! Lol And thanks for the honorable mentions. Matt & Laura.

You passed the pine grove ghost town 5 miles from 208 on the right. We had fun exploring that one. There is a cool cemetery there as well. We kayaked down the west walker getting there from minden side. Talk about a dangerous kayak adventure be prepared for t post in the middle of the river. The fishing was amazing on the west side. The cemetery really is amazing in Pine Grove. Sadly though people have vandalized it compared to how it looked 30 yrs ago. It’s not from weather and elements. Also there is an area by the old mill where you climb up the ridge into the trees and you will find lots of whole and broken obsidian arrowheads.

This was such an interesting, amazing video. There were many animals out there. The envionment seemed so rugged, and desolate. You reminded us that it is Winter, Doug. I had heard about Hilton flying people to, and from his ranch. I didn't realize how remote it is/was! How I'd love to see those signatures of famous people who stayed at the ranch. I can understand why there are caretakers... The few homesteads out there absolutely interest me. How would those children_ 30 miles from *civilization, get to school, and back I wonder. WOW, this video really was enjoyable, and very informative. 🎉Thank you, Doug and Kellie for another, super video. BTW, I always look forward to your luncheons. Very interesting and awesome video. Where Steve Fossett was found I did go hiking in that same area 20 years earlier coming out of the Ansel Adams Wilderness. It is indeed very rugged there and I remember having the sensation of being watched while I was there, later I came across someone with a dog that was totally spooked. I have absolutely no idea what led up to that but I was sure glad to get out. It was another hiker who found Fossett’s driver’s license and a couple of hundred dollar bills then bits and pieces of wreckage.

@@steveblankenship5474 Wow Steve, that is super interesting. Usually when the creep meter pegs out, it's time to leave. The only time wildlife has spooked me it was winter wolves following me in a dark Montana forest; all other times it's been a creepy or weird person (usually in California or Oregon). I love that Ansel Adams wilderness. Thank you for sharing that story.

@steveblankenship5474 Do you think there might be evidence of a large primate in the area or perhaps a trailside killer scenario? My conscience is always spot on if there is something. Heard chatter about some type of unidentified large predator in that and Yosemite area. Perhaps it is being covered up to not scare the public?

@ my other “alarm” moment was in the 70’s when I was just out of high school and me and my friend Alex went camping. We drove just outside Mammoth Mountain and camped on the side of a dirt road. A ranger came by and warned us that a previous camper left from a disturbance in the night- we should have left but didn’t. That night on my side of the tent there was like a large hand moving across the tent wall slowly. We are in the middle of nowhere and there should not be anyone for miles. I woke up my friend then we heard nothing and he went back to sleep. About an hour later same thing just like a very large hand was moving across the tent wall. I then started a fire and placed it outside and whatever it left. In the morning I pulled up that tent and drove straight home only stopping for the bathroom and gas. There is something in that area and I would not go back there again ESPECIALLY alone and I’ve hiked solo in Alaska before. Perhaps this was within 20 miles where Fossett was found.

@@HebrewLiteracy Sure, since I am out in the field I learned a cell phone is the easiest compact camera to bring and this Pixel 7 has a fantastic camera. Usually the audio is a limiting factor with the wind because you can't get any cord that is compatible with any external mike with a wind sock. It's just a bare bones cell phone! It's like using a fiddle to play in the Salzburg symphony; us poor country people just feel fortunate to make do! 💸👍

Greetings from Topaz Ranch Estates. This brings back great memories. Three years ago this month, I decided to go on a solo camping trip off this dirt road. I think I made camp below Big Indian Mountain. So quiet and peaceful with interesting geology. Ended up in Bridgeport and then on to Conway summit. My little 4x4 Ford Ranger does well in this terrain. Sure hope this area never gets developed. On a side note, I had the chance to visit Galena, IL in 2021 and tour President Grant's home. We may take a drive out to Hawthorne this weekend. Does Kelli work on Saturdays at the museum? Thank you.

But, it was definitely worth waiting for, I've always wanted to see what was on the west side of Mt.Grant! Never got to travel in that area, very interesting for sure. @@Brother_D_therail Hi Brother D! I bet you have been busy. Yes many mailboxes on the gravel. My old rural delivery carrier Rusty farms full time and delivers mail on the gravel traveling over 100 miles each time he does his route (he is still delivering mail, packages, baby chicks, honey bee packages, etc I think going on 30 years). Sometimes other farmers would pull him out of snowdrifts on the gravel road. He goes through a lot and of cars and plenty of tires (the preferred vehicle are the old Jeep suburbans for those routes). He was awesome, would call you if you had a package, and you could call him with any special instructions and was super dependable. 🚗
