In the heart of the Himalayas, a remote kingdom where the towering peaks hold ancient traditions, children grow up surrounded by the quiet presence of Buddhism, their lives often shaped by it in profound ways. In the village of Tangyer, 9-year-old Urgan faces a path set before him by an old Buddhist custom: as the youngest of his family, he must become a monk. This tradition, passed down through generations, binds him to the spiritual mountains that surround him.
Meanwhile, two best friends, Tenzin and Palkit, from the nearby kingdom of Zanskar, are about to embark on very different journeys. Tenzin is destined to be married to a man she has never met, following the traditional path expected of her. In contrast, Palkit has chosen a life of spiritual dedication and will become a Buddhist nun. Their friendship, forged in the shadow of the Himalayas, is about to be tested as their futures diverge.
As Tenzin faces the uncertainty of marriage and Palkit the solitude of monastic life, Urgan sets out on his own journey to a monastery 5000 meters above sea level, accompanied by his cousin Norbu. Their trek through the snowy mountains is not only a physical test but a spiritual passage, filled with encounters that reveal the depth of their culture’s ties to Buddhism.
The rugged beauty of the Himalayas is more than just a backdrop to these children's lives; it is the very heart of their stories. Each step they take, whether towards tradition, spiritual awakening, or personal transformation, is tied to the ancient Buddhist beliefs that have long guided their people. Here, among the peaks and valleys, the boundaries between friendship, duty, and faith blur, weaving their fates together even as they walk different paths.
