A Must watch - Rare wild Danphe / Himalayan Monal | Most Beautiful Colourful bird from the Himalayas
During a few treks in Kanchenjunga National Park, Sikkim and Kedarnath Musk-Deer Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarakhand. I came across one of the most beautiful pheasant the Himalayan Monal (another one Indian Peacock) became one of favourite bird in the Himalayas. My first video documentation of Himalayan Monal which involved sub-zero temperatures, quite a few treks with 18-20kg backpack, & bad weather. A must watch - don't miss the best video of male Monal between 4-6 mnts.
The Himalayan Monal - National bird of Nepal, locally known as Danphe; And state bird of Uttarakhand, India, locally known as Monal.
The Himalayan Monal is a large-sized pheasant. Notable features in the male include a long, metallic green crest, coppery feathers on the back and neck, and a prominent white rump that is most visible when the bird is in flight. The tail feathers of the male are uniformly rufous, becoming darker towards the tips, whereas the lower tail coverts of females are white, barred with black and red. The female has a prominent white patch on the throat and a white strip on the tail.
This beautiful bird mostly lives at an elevation of 9000 - 14000 ft. They may climb down to lower elevations during winter. Found mostly in the Himalayan hill forest with extensive rhododendron and bamboo-dominated understory. Decked out in all the colors of the rainbow, The male is the image of iridescence; green crested head, red neck, green shoulders, blue back, orange tail & black underparts. The male is a very shy bird and mostly keeps distance & avoids a good sight except if accepts one as not-a-threat. Female is with a pale blue eye patch, white throat, and streaky brown body. Found in Himalayan hill forest, typically in areas with extensive rhododendron and bamboo-dominated understory.
Mostly seen on foraging on roots of the plants on the exposed rock surfaces, and at times on tree with moss covered branches. Also they dig through the snow patches to obtain plant roots and invertebrate prey. When on tree, they keep idle without any movements in case of human activities below.
The species is threatened due to poaching, & Human disturbances due to various development activities. The primary poaching threat is due to the beautiful crest which is valuable for Humans.
