HIMARS was developed to provide rocket-artillery that was mobile and easily moved via air. It is mobile on the battlefield with less maintenance and more common drivetrain parts. In this regard GMARS is looking to build on this in an area that doesn't need air mobility. The carrying of 2 pods would not be as air mobile, so the US and many countries will still prefer HIMARS. Further having two pods loaded vs. one, meh, firing all twelve will be rare and firing twelve over two to four launchers more common to disperse units. PLUS the fact that the pods of six can be easily unloaded/reloaded in 4 minutes means carrying two is not a fundamental increase in firepower. Remember this is a way to keep GMLRS, ATACMS, and PrSM in the battlespace. If I had 20 launchers I can see good arguments for HIMARS vs. GMRS. If I have 60 to 100, I lean towards HIMARS because the percentage available to fire is going up and a little St GMRLRS, GLSDBs, ATACMS, or PrCM vs. none... I'll take the single pod version with lots of GMLRS, ATACMS, GLSDBs, and PrCM toting trucks following! AND if I am on a continent and don't need air mobility, I'll take a mixture!

HIMARS is so hyped while it is the smaller inferior brother of the much superior M270 MLRS multiple rocket system. The MLRS has twice the missile load, better protection and tracks (so better all round terrain mobility). I can understand HIMARS for airborne units but not for mechanized units.
@charlesrichardson8635
@charlesrichardson8635 5 ай бұрын
@@N.Sniper I have never heard something so silly. HIMARS and MLRS are both launching systems for the same exact series of GMLRS and ATCMS and now PrSM! The use the same exact targeting and networking software. It takes five minutes to change out a pod. So there very few occasions where have two pods vs one pod is a real issue. HIMARS works well for Ukraine because they are used to support at the theater/corps level and can travel further and faster with fewer repairs than a MRLS. Further less specialized equipment is needed to support a HIMARS. If you are talking about supporting a division in an unproved field, grab a MRLS that's why we have both. Now can a HIMARS travel behind a division of armor, no, but that is not usually necessary. You have a minimum of 75 km, note the word "minimum". 300 km for ATACMS or 600 for PrSM. This is why SPG's are not as popular as wheeled arty now either. No Russian cares that the bonus around about to shred their tank or the 155 mm cluster shell that is going to shred their company came from a tracked or wheeled... or towed gun for that matter... or the angle the shell is coming in from is influenced by roads or smoother ground. I do think people should realize it is GMLRS that claim the butcher's bill.

I think a version with twice the range of HIMARS, but the same precision, would be much better than two rocket pods...
@thuggeegaming659
@thuggeegaming659 Жыл бұрын
HIMARS refers to the rocket launcher, not the vehicle. The GMLRS and ATACMS rockets are the relevant weapons in question, and there is an extended range version of the GMLRS which works with existing HIMARS. They already have an MLRS with two rocket launchers, but it is tracked, and much slower than HIMARS so it lacks the ability to "shoot and scoot" as quickly, which is what gives HIMARS an edge over tracked vehicles. So a wheeled version does have advantages over existing systems, and can use the extended range GMLRS.
@gluteusmaximus1657
@gluteusmaximus1657 Жыл бұрын
This report said that Rheinmetall is talking to Diehl about the rockets. Diehl is well known for the production of precision missiles and other ammo! So maybe the upgrade to GMARS will include both advantages.

@charlesrichardson8635
@charlesrichardson8635 Жыл бұрын
@@Janoip So load up two HIMARS with two pods in four minutes each and fire if you want 2 ATACMS on target at the same time. The HIMARS launchers talk to each other calculate the ground offset and fire for same ToT. Again, it's more about air mobility. The original requiments set looked at two pods on a launcher and concluded making it easier to load on a air heavy hauler, say two at a time was more important than two pods. NOW, that Sweden and Finland are in NATO air mobility is a bigger NATO requirement, but a combination of HIMARS and GMARS is pretty cool.
@johnsilver9338
@johnsilver9338 Жыл бұрын
@@Janoip US already has that with M270 MLRS. Tracked and armored. But in terms of mobility nothing can beat M142 HIMARS as it can be quickly deployed to the front lines as it is small and light enough to be carried by a C-130 which don't need a proper airfield to land and/or takeoff. The planned GMARS will be similar to Korean K239 Chunmoo and Israel's Lynx/PULS which are as big and as heavy as the M270 but unarmored though mobile enough for "shoot-and-scoot" tactics.

@verdebusterAP I agree. The HIMARS isn't obsolete. You can also replace the 6 pak pod in just 4 minutes. Replacing the M-270's is just a matter of them reaching end of life cycle. Most are 2 decades old. There's politics at play here. Where they going to be built... Anyway, ATACMS are no longer being produced and haven't been for sometime. It's replacement, the PrSM has started initial production. 499+km range and smaller so 2 can fit into a pod of the same size as a 6 pak instead of 1. The real technology is in rockets. Not these launchers. The initial PrSM will production won't be any different then the GMLRS rockets except for range and a slightly larger warhead. The 2nd run of PsRM's will be more advanced. They'll be able to be launched from a mobile(moving) launcher instead of stationary. And it will be able to track a moving target. While GPS will still be used(so it knows it's starting point) once launched it will primarily use a new improved Inertial Navigation System that's totally jam proof. This will be combined with optical sensors. It will also have upgradable software. The goal is to allow it to switch targets at the destination point. It can choose a higher value target. Like a tank over an IFV. Finally, all these improvements are to also to be incorporated into the current GMLRS rockets. You can run. But you cannot hide...

I mean, yeah HIMARS is actually very outdated, Americans were surprised at how useful Ukraine found it to be because it's not even remotely close to a modern platform. The GMARS looks like a great middle ground upgrade while the USA is currently redeploying tactical and strategic missile platforms back on the battlefield. The US was more or less tricked into not developing these platforms in exchange for Russia signing de-nuclearization deals which have ultimately been disrespected by Russia for a long time, but that led to the US not upgrading from HIMARS to the next big thing for about half a century. Only the missiles themselves got upgrades, i.e. GMLR to ATACMS.

It is apparent that the Ukraine War is buying time for NATO members to tool up new weapon systems to meet the current Russian weapon systems and their follow on updates to those systems. Historically Russia can not play “ catch- up” very easily the difference in weapons expenditures vs GNP is a wide gap for Russia to fill. The wild card is whether Russia’s Allie’s like China could assist to maintain Russia’s parity on the battlefield. A big question mark- ugh.

Hundreds of billions is being spent. China does not have that kind of coin to back broke Russia. It would benefit the west if China weakened themselves by draining their military potential supporting Russia. Personally I do not see any notable advantage to China. Even if they managed to get what they want in Ukraine; how long can the keep it? There are resistance cells in Russia and occupied Ukraine. Soon Belarus is going to be drawn in. This from the commander of the Belarussian brigade of the International Legion. They are urging Belarussian generals to kick out the Russian Army. Sympathizers inside Belarus are to wait for their signal. The plot thickens! Safe to say Russia is done after this SMO. None for a long time.

Actually, it is not yet certain that the Bundeswehr will use them, KMW (now Nexter-KNDS) is also developing together with Israeli company Elbit , producing Euro-PULS.

Requirements of the Bundeswehr The war in Ukraine highlights the important role of combat-ready rocket artillery systems. Therefore, many European nations are considering or have already decided to modernize the capabilities of their armed forces in the field of rocket artillery. At the same time, obsolescence should be eliminated and ammunition depots replenished, since many of the systems currently in use and the existing ammunition contingents date back to Cold War times. For example, the Bundeswehr urgently needs replacements for training ammunition for the MARS II rocket artillery systems. To date, the MARS launcher has used 110-mm Light Artillery System (LARS) rockets for training and exercise, which the Bundeswehr phased out in the 1990s. These missiles have a much shorter range and explosive power. Therefore, they can be used much more easily on training ranges. However, as Der Spiegel reported earlier this year from an internal Bundeswehr report, nitroglycerin is leaking from the more than 30,000 missiles in storage. As a result, the stockpiles are to be sorted out. According to reports, there are several ways in which this ammunition could be replaced. For example, new munitions could be developed for the exercise or marketable light missiles could be procured. It is likely that the KMW-Elbit cooperation will aim, among other things, to offer Elbit's 122-mm Accular missiles to the Bundeswehr. The Accular missiles have a range of up to 35 km and a 20-kg warhead. The missiles are available on the market and have been field-tested. For use by the Bundeswehr, however, they would certainly have to be integrated into the MARS II systems and qualified according to German standards. According to reports, however, this would be possible much more quickly than developing a new missile. In addition, this solution would offer the Bundeswehr the advantage - compared with a pure training system - that the missiles could be used not only for training and exercise, but also for deployment if required. However, Elbit also has a broad portfolio of effective agents in the area of long-range artillery, which could be offered to the Bundeswehr as part of this cooperation. The Bundeswehr would like to close a capability gap as part of the "Future Indirect Fire System" project.

In the sub-project "Future Long-Range Indirect Fire System", rocket artillery is to be modernized and upgraded with new, more powerful means of action of various types. With the Extra, Elbit offers a missile designed to hit targets up to 150 km away with an accuracy of up to 10 meters. The warhead weighs 120 kg. In addition to a unitary blast-splitter variant, a penetrator variant is also offered. The Predator Hawk missile is capable of penetrating even further. The missile has a range of 300 km and an accuracy of 10 m, according to the manufacturer. As a result of intensified cooperation, Krauss Maffei-Wegmann and Elbit have unveiled the Euro-PULS, a successor system for the artillery's MARS/MLRS multiple rocket launchers based on Elbit Systems' Multi-Purpose Universal Launching System (PULS). The two companies entered into a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the field of rocket artillery just this summer, S&T reported. With an advanced effector portfolio, the system will receive longer-range missiles as well as practice missiles that may be used on national proving grounds, Elbit described the objective of the development. According to the company, the achieved result fully meets the requirements of MLRS users. This next generation of European long-range artillery, called "Euro-PULS," has already been offered to European customers as a follow-on system, Elbit said. Euro-PULS, along with a range of precision-guided munitions, is already in service, he said. KMW complements Euro-PULS with its decades of expertise as a systems house and its vast experience in building and adapting (rocket) artillery systems to European standards, he said. This, he said, offers the possibility to integrate any missile according to the user's requirements. Both companies are aiming for local missile production to ensure European independence. This would result in a future missile artillery system made in Europe. Ralf Ketzel, chairman of KMW's management board, sees the partnership with Elbit as an opportunity to highlight the potential of its artillery capabilities. "This will allow KMW to become one of the most advanced systems houses for rocket artillery," Ketzel added. Yehuda (Udi) Vered, general manager of Elbit System Land, commented that he is confident that the Euro-PULS will provide an effective and timely solution to the operational and industrial needs of European countries. He said he is encouraged by the high level of interest this initiative is already generating among European and NATO countries."

No, why should Germany be concerned of Poland? It's a very poor country, with not much people. Poland gets the most money from EU since 30 years, where Germany pays the most of. Sure they have a very stupid revancist nationalist (PiS-) gov. now and plan to spend a lot of their peoples money to create a 'tank industry', with the help of the Koreans. But no problem. 🤣 German technics was always more advanced and it don't looks like that will change in future.

I believe a good name for the German New double the firepower size MLRS would be M270 MLRS copy on wheels
@cyber_habanero
@cyber_habanero Жыл бұрын
The Germans have already a name for such M270 called 'MarsII', but it's not a copy but an upgrade to the outdated US version. There were 5 of those tanks already delivered to Ukraine in 2022. Seems they produce that system now from tracks to wheels because learned in Ukr. that on wheels such could be faster reach positions.
@terryhatcher9644
@terryhatcher9644 Жыл бұрын
@cyber_habanero6851 The only difference I saw noted on the European MARSII launcher is that it has a fire control system that inhibits the use of cluster munitions rockets. The 2019 upgrade package of the M270 has scheduled the new fire control system for the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), a new 600 Bhp engine, new/rebuilt transmission and increased armor protection. The US is refurbishing its entire fleet, including older decommissioned units. The wheels vs. tracks do add speed but limit mobility in certain terrains. I would also think that the additional weight on wheels would possibly cause bogging down in difficult terrain. If you can keep the wheeled vehicles near good roads so you can shoot and scoot, that takes care of the problem. With the new PrSM and ATACMS, they would be standing off further from counter battery fire and would be susceptible mainly to aircraft and quick response Missile attack. Both of them probably take more time than normal counter battery to locate, identify ,set coordinates and get to the launch area.
