HIMBA TRIBES. Discovering the Wonders of Namibia

On the way to our next destination, we made an unforgettable stop to admire the baobabs up close, majestic giants that can reach heights of up to 25 meters and have trunks with a circumference of up to 10 meters. Some of these incredible trees are an astonishing age of approximately 4000 years.
The next day, we headed to visit an authentic Himba village, a semi-nomadic cattle-breeding people who share their roots and language with the Herero. Although these two groups separated about 200 years ago, they are differentiated primarily by their distinctive attire.
The Himba are the only native group in Namibia that keeps alive the lifestyle that their ancestors had centuries ago. Each tribe is led by its spiritual chief, and although polygamy is practiced, there is a rule that limits the time a man can spend with the same wife without caring for another, to just two nights.
As for their clothing, the Himba do not wear clothes in the conventional sense. Their outfits consist of simple loincloths and a profusion of necklaces and bracelets. The women stand out for their elaborate and decorated hairstyles. Also, to protect yourself from the burning sun, apply a mixture of ocher, butter and herbs to your skin, which gives them that distinctive reddish hue.
These cultural groups have faced challenges throughout history, from war conflicts to oppression by the German colonial government. And today, tourism also has an impact on their lives and customs, especially their diet.
These cultures are authentic relics of a remote past that have reached our days. They are unique, unrepeatable and have a lot to teach us. Knowing them is also a way to protect them. Join us on this journey to explore and learn from these amazing cultures that endure over time.
