You’re right! If you write kanpai as 乾杯、it means cheers. But 完敗, pronounced as the same kanpai, means “complete defeat” (trust me I’m Japanese haha). There’re many words like these, which make jpop lyrics so fun and have profound meanings!!

@user-zj8ef7wg5s I guess that's another reason why kanji is important over a strictly hiragana+katakana system. Besides easily identifiable meanings in sentences and word separation.
