The HIMI MAYA gouache set and similar sets have been a sensation on KZbin for at least two years, reaching a bit of a fever pitch during lockdowns when we all wanted fun art supplies to distract us. But as gorgeous as these HIMI paints are when freshly opened, how did they fare for me over a year into owning them and using them as I do my other supplies? In this extremely not sponsored video, I get real, down, and dirty about how these paints held up for me over time. Could I get them to reactivate? Find out my personal opinion of the paints after over a year here, and comment if you have other ideas or hacks to keep them going longer!

The solution to this problem has been given a few times on the gouache subreddit: you buy small plastic travel jars, that are meant for cosmetics. They close airtight. When you get your Himi, you transfer these paints in these bottles. I have mine on these for many months now, and there is zero drying. I never had to experience Himi drying out as I see so many people here. The jars cost $7 for 6 jars (I got the 2oz ones). They are of course reusable.

Would you believe I recently bought the same size set as you about a month ago??? I haven’t even opened it yet as currently have nowhere to paint. I sooo wish I had met you and your channel earlier. However, on the brighter side, I know that once opened, I will should use of them as quickly as possible as practice before using my expensive gouache! So, this video has, in the end, been more than a little useful, and less depressing than you feared, thank you! Until I sort out my home, I will continue to simply enjoy your videos as a way of getting my fix of cuteness 🎨👩‍🎨🖌🥰🥰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 xx

I am SO glad you did find me, my Scottish friend, because your comments never fail to make me happy! 😘😀🤗. Totally agree that just knowing you wait to open them until you are ready to really use them, just as you plan, and then throw your usual fear of wasting paint out the window and just use them as much as you can while you’re learning-just like you said!-and they will serve you very well I believe.

Even if you let the himi guache dry out completely, you can just soak them in water for like 48 hours and mix them even if they've been dry for over a year. They turn back to good as new basically

What got me is some people can make theirs last longer so I just felt like it was me, but I’m convinced they must be doing the weekly spa treatments for these and I just didn’t and wouldn’t. Thank you for visiting my channel!! 😊

A real deal killer to me is, people are suggesting adding clove oil to those kits, to retard spoilage. I don’t want to use stuff that smells like the dentist’s office. Also, even though others recommended using lavender oil, I don’t want ANY oil in my water based paints. A final note, I wouldn’t use tap water. Either purified water or distilled.
@CreatingCuteArt
@CreatingCuteArt 2 жыл бұрын
@P Wulfson well that is timely, I did get the suggestion for clove oil enough times that when Sarah Burns Studio suggested it on her recent video I ordered it to add to my gouache! I didn’t think about oil and water, oh no! 😂😂

I tried a little stiffer brush even on the dried paint and it worked pretty well.. Also, I watched a youtube where someone really got at them with water and stirred them up really well after they had dried and it seemed to work.. they are still good..

I did try that but unfortunately it didn't work for me! It made me so sad. I just think mine in particular (especially the white, green, purple and yellow) we're just so crumbly they couldn't be salvaged. I do think that would work with the others, but I just get discouraged thinking how long they will last after all that effort if I don't use them continuously!

100% agree. They are so yummy at first, but a pita to maintain long term. Tho, no matter how dried out they get, they will always come back to life with some water. Hot water speeds up that process a little. Just takes a lot of time. Arrtx realized this exact issue with their version of the Himi jelly gouache, so they made another set of gouache. Pretty much the same ultra creamy and vibrant paint, but in a different case. They are 9 colors, each in a little tin with a twist off cap. They stay damp with zero issues. I absolutely love them, although the tops do get jammed if any paint dries on the rim. So I purchased a little paint box, just like your tiny Transon one, but larger, and put the paints in there. Now I couldn't be happier!

Oh and if you prefer ceramic palettes, but wind up using plastic ones like these sets come with, scrub the pallet with any white toothpaste. It will then act like ceramic, making colors mix easier and not run off and separate. :)

I have 2 solutions. I watched in some video a girl using a ziploc, she put the closed palette in the bag and was good for more than a year likr brand new. The other solution is more expensive, so there is this spray thing is by the same brand and is made specifically for keep the gouache nice or to bring it back to life guaranting 0 mold I think is called Himi moisturizer or something likr that.

When our paints are deadly dry we use hot water for night and then let water dry for normal condition. But it works with real classic gouache, don't know what this Himi consists of... but when nothing to lose why don't just try ^^

I rather pay more and get artist quality paints. This is awful! Now all these new companies come out of nowhere. Cheaper, more colours, that's what many people want. I prefer companies which are around for a long time and I know I buy quality. Thanks for showing this. I hope many artists see your video.

I’m seeing a lot of comments around that if people try these first and never try Windsor and Newton or Holbein or Schmincke or anything, they think they don’t like the medium, so I just hope you’re right and that artists give those tubes a shot because I LOVE gouache and think so many people would if they tried one of those, but I totally understand they are expensive and it’s so tempting to just dive in for 20 bucks and get all these colors. I was! But I wanted the info out there and I hope people do find it helpful. Thank you so much for commenting!!😊😊

Thank you. That was very interesting and helpful. I bought some really old schmincke gouache colors and the reactivate so beautiful. Even the colours which had tried up in tubes. But I do have a similar problem with the arteza gouache in tubes. I put them into half pens and the don't reactivate easy. Maybe you try the schmincke horadam gouache.... I love them. Best wishes from Germany

That's definitely what I do now! I use the cover and the internal palette just as palettes, and the square part that holds the jelly cups as an ink palette to hold my inks when I paint with them!

They are a gimmick. When I first got mine I put a drop of glycerin into them and used distilled water. It's been over a year and they are still good. Clove oil will help if you use tap water to keep them from molding.

I honestly like mine dried out. I let mine dry on purpose I keep the pallet open for the most part close if i am going away or something. I put a few drops of water in and mix it just where it is wet and they work perfect. I honestly think they work better then when they were jelly like they are less sneaky and i can control the thickness and water better.

Unfortunately with any gouache sitting in pans/air tight pallet, you will need to maintain them. If you don’t want to, then best to use tube gouache and squeeze out as you use them. I have my Winsor and Newton gouache I an air tight pallet (which I love) I put a tiny drop of clove oil in the paints which keeps away mould. I maintain my pallet so they don’t dry up. I maintain mine monthly.

I can't stand these things, lol. New, used or dried out I never liked them. When I even thought of taking them out I dreaded it. I got rid of them and was so relieved. In my opinion, no art supply should fill one with dread. I have never experienced that with another art supply. I do prefer acryla gouache though. Got some of those and I've never been happier.
@CreatingCuteArt

Ok that is EXACTLY it. You nailed it. They sit there taking up a huge amount of space on my art cart, and I feel guilty thinking about throwing them out but I feel dread at the thought of using them instead of one of my fun tubes of acryl gouache or watercolor sets. Why do we do this to ourselves? Great comment, thank you for coming to my channel!😊!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that didn’t like them 😬 It turned me off of gouache as a medium because this was my first Gouache set. For me it was not opaque enough and many colors dried dull. I got Winsor & Newton gouache a while later and fell in love with the medium.

They e very pleasing to look at when they're new and the "jelly" feeling is a gimmick. These are clearly meant for sketchbooks and not art that is planned to be sold. No pigment info, no lightfastness, awful drying after months and needs more maintenance than normal gouache, actually normal gouache in a tub doesn't even need maintenance. It's a no from me. But I think every self respecting artist would invest into artist grade gouache , I'm sticking to my Winsor&Newton gouache.
