Hindemith is the bridge, between modern and ancient, expansive and simple, complex and sparse, dreams and the real.

I have a confession to make when it comes to Paul Hindemith: I HATE learning his music. But, if I get across that particular bridge for whatever reason, I absolutely love playing his music and/or listening to his music.

It’s that moment in rehearsal, after the gruelling practice at home when you realize…..”my God, this is truly a masterpiece!” It makes it all worth while.
A long-time favorite. A delightful work full of personality. The accentuated folk influence mixed with Hindemith's sense of quirkiness. A winner. And what a performance! It does justice to the work.

What an incredible performance! I loved the interpretation and clarity displayed by both the soloist and the orchestra... this is a extremely difficult piece to put together. Usually the third movement feels like it is going to derail, but the orchestra and soloist really nailed it!

This is one of my favorite viola concerti, and may I say it was "done to a turn" by Antoine, Paavo and the FRSO. I especially enjoy the humor in the second movement which I understand depicts a cuckoo sitting on a fence, one of four folk songs Hindemith used to full effect in composing this masterwork.

This concerto for viola and orchestra makes use of popular tunes, but they are marged with other elements in the music, so the result is a quite astonishing score. The orchetration is excellent - which is difficult in a concerto for viola and large orchestra.

I beg to differ,@organboi: I didn't think he was overly dramatic. His face was hard to watch, because he seemed to be focusing so hard, but I feel his body movements made up for it. Not sure what to think of his facial expressions. I think he is a pretty great violist, though.

Does anybody know what viola he was using? His C string didn't seem extremely clear at times, usually a feature of the instrument, so it probably isn't a Strad. It looks a little older than modern. Does anybody know?

I've always liked this work. I have to say however, that it sounds dreadfully difficult for the soloist. I know that the viola was Hindemith's "home" instrument. He certainly did not write this easy for himself did he? sanjosemike
@MusicaNovaaz7 жыл бұрын
It was written with his own technique in mind. A recording of him playing is on KZbin. I would describe his playing as "efficient"-he got the job done, but there was not a lot of subtlety, his right hand was pretty crude, his vibrato was generic, and his intonation was good, not great. He takes the last movement way faster than everyone else-it matches his metronome indications-but it's kind of a mess. As for difficulty. some players find it very hard, other find it pretty easy, It's easier, for sure, than the Walton.
