I don't think the leadership is committed to becoming strong. Defense spending should increase to at least 1.5% of gdp, and R&D should increase to at least 1% of gdp. Who wants to defend a weak ally? The Philippines is a liability to any strong nation. It doesn't help that Filipinos are culturally colonized.

@@black_sheep2520 I will not use the term "weak ally" given the strategic location of the Philippines for western powers, it's definitely a leverage to maintain indo pacific balance. There's no need to increase military spending as there is already an existing mutual defense treaty that protects the nation if in case of a conflict, China did actually cause this issue to balloon, they are occupying PH territorial waters as they are getting closer and closer to the coastline, harrashing the fishermen and even harminng the coastguards. Endless attack of water canon. They only stopped when the mutual defense treaty has been re-enforce. How many negotiations did the past admistration did, even Duterte pacified them but they took advantage. ASEAN is not a security alliance, they don't have a say regarding geopolitical conflicts if the national security is already at risk.

Philippines' mistake was expecting support in the first place, it just made our country look truly naive in international politics, a clear indication that we don't even know our neighbors and their thought processes. Filipinos have always prided themselves as Western-leaning while ignoring our neighbors and now we're seeing the results of voluntarity ignorance.

This is true. Many southeast Asian nations view us as a puppet of the US, which isn’t wrong in a sense. We deserve our own autonomy and our own rights regardless of the US. Right now we’re caught between two colonial powers and the rest of Asia is going to feed us to them.

Imo, if anything, we need to figure out how stand out on our own. As always, look at Vietnam. Despite having almost no media coverage in terms of their issues with China in the SCS, they not only manage to hold the most islands and territories within the area, but are also able to reap the benefits of China's economic excursion in SEA. Why? Because they know when to speak and be assertive, and they know when to be pragmatic and shut up. Vietnam has time and time again managed to best China not only because its truly committed to forging good relationships with all while not sacrificing anything, but also because it's industry is it's leverage against China. The Philippines has nothing. For one, we depend too much on the US without receiving anything in return. We are always under the assumption that they will save and help, but we are only being manipulated and used as a pawn. Our service-based economy hinders us from the same industrial leverage and growth that Vietnam has. And because our growth is limited, our military is limited, leaving us in a constant spiral downward. Only through an aggresive foreign policy and an economy that is able to stand on it's own and offer an alternative to China can we fight back.

Because Asean is an economic organization and not a military pact. Didn't Duterte say we cannot rely on anyone, even the US. Thats why he played it safe. He saw how China became an economic power before become a military power and that was what he wanted to do, earn enough money to become rich to buy armaments so you dont get bullied. Meanwhile, play it safe while you do this. Play the middle ground. How did China get rich? By attracting its enemy's (US and EU) factories to relocate to their country. Make it attractive for the businesses to invest, be friendly to them.
