There are no guidelines as such. You need to take the decision as per design and site conditions. If overlay thickness is limited to providing only a surface layer, go for it. If overlay is higher and you are required to provide DBM plus BC, better to explore the option of recycling.

Thankyou for this video sir. I have a doubt sir, when Virgin aggregates is replaced by RAP and as the percentage of RAP increases in mix, can we expect an increase in Marshal stability value and also VMA of the mix

It may. After certain RAP content, rejuvenator does not help much and stiffness of the mix increases, that increases the stability value. When you increase the RAP content in a mix, Vbe will also increase slightly (because aggregates in RAP will not absrob any binder) and if you are compacting the mix at 4% air voids, VMA will increase marginally.

Sir, Can polymer modified bitumen be used as new binder with RAP

Practically No for two reasons 1. New binder should be softer than the target binder grade. If you are targeting final grade of the binder VG40, use VG30. 2. As per IRC guidelines, RAP is used only in DBM layer and there is no advantage of using a PMB grade binder in bituminous base course layer.

No, all three are mixed otherwise it is not the design with RAP. It becomes design with reclaimed aggregates, Bitumen is lost.

@@SatishIITR Let me differentiate the process into 2 stages so that you can judge that I understood well. Stage 1: Aggregate proportioning The fresh aggregates and the aggregates obtained after removal of bitumen from RAP are used. First individual gradings are done and then theoretical blending is done to establish and fix the gradation of the target mix. Stage 2: RAP, fresh aggregate and fresh bitumen are mixed and Marshal test is run. Is that correct?

sir, if i do marshal stability test on virgin aggregate at different binder content viz.4,4.5,5 and 5.5%. and find out an optimum binder content as per specification. (say optimum binder content i got as 4.5%). now I'm replacing virgin aggregates with RAP in various percentages say 20, 40, 60% etc. shall i perform marshal test with the optimum binder content of 4.5 % that i got for virgin aggregate. shall studies be conducted various binder contents(4,4.5,5 and 5.5%) for each percentage replacement of RAP.

Yes, OBC will change with proportion of of RAP in the mix. Therefore find the OBC for earch RAP content.
