Hindsight Genius: 10 New Cars You Should Have Bought & Kept in 1969 | Their Worth Then & Now

In this episode, we are going to travel back in time and plonk ourselves into the year 1969 with around $60,000 and the knowledge of which 10 cars that have appreciated most in value between 1969 and now. Our mission is to purchase and buy these cars and put them away in our barn for retrieval and sale when we return back to now to fund our retirement.

Ah - hindsight is always so clear. Of course collecting $60,000 in 1969 to buy 10 cars would have been quite a feat. And storing them safely and maintaining them for 53 years wouldn't be cheap. But what a thrill to walk into a building and see those pretty ponies waiting to see the light of day -- glorious!

Bought a 1969 Javelin SST when in college. Big Bad Orange, black vinyl top, same color bumpers, black pin strips and mag wheels. 390 motor that produced 325 horsepower, reclining bucket seats, popular at the Drive In Movies. Side pipe chrome molding, just beautiful.

My family owned a Chrysler/ Plymouth dealership from 1960-1985. We had a 69 Superbird with a 440 sitting on the showroom floor, couldn’t sell it, people thought it was ugly, finally transferred it to another dealership. My Dad told me I should buy it and forget I owned it for 50 years. I didn’t because he didn’t know anything. Ya, right. Lol

You mean '70 Superbird. Chrysler didn't make a '69 Superbird, it was the Dodge Daytona in '69. Plymouth came out with the 'Superbird the following year.

My first car a 1969 Roadrunner with a 383 Magnum with a 4 speed. Bought it in 1973 used. No AC or power brakes or steering. But it would move and move fast. I installed a Lear 8-track under-dash player and my first album played was Joe Walsh James Gang. Paid $900 for that car and within a few weeks met my first wife on a date in that car. 49 years later the car is gone, wife is gone, and my family is gone. Great memories.

I'm 75, ( 23 in 1969) & that year was great in many ways, i.e.Moon Landing, Woodstock, Muscle Cars, etc! I had a '64 Pontiac then, that I kept till 1982! Dated my future wife that year & married in '70. Still married 52 yrs. later, but almost lost her to heart problems 2 yrs. ago! Sorry to hear of your losses!

'69.5 was the best 383 version believe it came with 440 heads, which gave the 383 a bit more bite (not sure why, maybe the factory ran out of 383 heads? or maybe they needed to make quota for their Nascar production car, qualification...)

My 68 Roadrunner already had a couple of modifications when I purchased it in 1975. A Hurst competition 3 speed racing shifter on the floor from on column. Electric fuel pump, which I never used. American racing wheels all around. Then I sunk 1500 into the 383 , with 11-1 compression, Edelbrock manifold, Holly 650 cfi drilled Out for 8 secondary spray feeds. 4.11 Posi- trac rear end. That changed the car Into a missile. Timed at Bandamier , Morrison Co. Low 11s. Had not sold this Plymouth it may have fetched 80k now.

Our family collectively had several 1969 autos. AMC Javelin, Chevy 3/4 ton pick up, a four door and a two door, Chrysler 300’s. Each had the 440 with a four barrel and both would snap your neck back when you put the foot down in big heavy smooth quiet white knuckle power.

Being in the military and getting only $121 per month, made any of these totally out of affordability. I did come home and later purchased a 69 Hurst SC/Rambler, 66 Mustang, 69 AMX, 70 Charger, any of which I would love to have now. Oh wait, I do still have a 69 AMX that is sort of special to me.

I bought my brother's '68 Road Runner when he was deployed to Japan. I traded it for a '70 Duster that had white bucket seats and wood insets. Some guy plowed into me the next week. They wouldn't total it, so it ran fairly well until my later ex-husband totalled it for real in '78.

My first car was a 66 Mustang convertible and paid 400 dollars for it. Second car was a 67 Mustang fastback with 390 and 4 speed. Paid 500 dollars for it. This was in 1976 and now I’m 63 years old. If only I could go back with a pocket full of money. Thanks for the video.

My first brand new car was a '69 Charger 500! bought it off the lot in Reseda CA. Had 440 with auto trans, A/C PS PB AM radio and factory sport wheels with beauty rings! Also came with rust from the factory! NO CHARGE! Real fast & real nice to drive. Setting next to it was a '69 Coronet base model nothing on it but a 426/425HP dual quads beast! Could have got the Hemi car for $3000!! But said no because no PS & no PB just an auto trans! Hindsight!! The 375 HP 440 was fast enough for this 21- year- kid

When I was in the military in '72, a civilian friend had a hemi Charger 500, red, with a 4 speed in line shifter. He spent $2,500 to send the engine to Keith Black in CA to have him rebuild & blueprint it. He wound up with so many speed parts it sometimes scared him to drive it. He did a hard dead stop take off one evening & all you could see were 2 rooster tails of fiery sparks shooting up about 10', from the tires being flattened out & the rims contacting the pavement. Certainly, the scariest car I've ever ridden in.

I bought a 1970 Mach 1 Mustang from a buddy of mine in 1973, it had 50K miles on it, paid $1800. I drove it for 10 years and sold it for $1800. How I wish I still had that car. My roommate in college had a 1969 442, years later he traded it in on a Porsche, he has always regretted it.

Ah, but foresight is always better. I didn't get the Coronet RT with a Hemi, but I did get the Coronet Super Bee with the 383 Magnum and a 4-speed for around $3300. And it still sleeps in my garage until the chance of rain is 10% or less. Then it comes out to set the pavement on fire. Don't ask if it is for sale, 'cause the answer's still "NO!" and has been for 53 years.

I bought a '69 Super Bee in March '71, for $2,100. It was immaculate. Was a 383 Magnum, 3 speed Torque Flight. What a monster. Squealed the tires at 60 mph & did a 2 block smoke out until I let off. I kick myself to this day for ever getting rid of it. But, in 1973 insurance for it was $800 per year. And, that possibly could've been liability only. Was 22 when I sold it for $1,200. The friggen government was on a quest to get rid of muscle cars & they certainly made them unaffordable with the high insurance rates for young guys.

There's an original concourse 69 Gold RR with it's original 426 Hemi, 4-speed, bench seat where I live. Owner bought it new in 69. It's reported to be one of the best conditioned originals in the country. It's an amazing machine to look at.

My ex wife's dad owned the '69 ZL1 Camaro with the all aluminum V8. It was a dusty garage queen,but 100% complete, straight and rust free. He passed in 2008 and I think she sold it with his tools (retired mechanic) for around $100k in 2010? They said something about $800k in this video.

I'd bump the Torino GT 428 from the list. 10 regular production cars for this list in my book would be: Hemi Daytona, Trans Am RA IV Convertible, COPO Camaro, BOSS '9 Mustang, BOSS '9 Cougar, Shelby GT-500 Conv, Coronet R/T Hemi conv, Six Pack Roadrunner, Six Pack Super Bee, Hemi GTX.

I had a 1973 Plymouth Satellite 318 V-8 that looked just like the police cars on "Columbo." Kept it nineteen years and 237,000 miles. Went through three engines, two transmissions, two rear ends, the driver's door hinges, and two collisions with body work at both ends; reupholstered twice, and repainted once. The windshield wiper motor was original. I finally got rid of it in 1992 when I moved to Ohio and it wouldn't start reliably in the winters. If they still made them today with fuel injection and a slightly more economical engine, I'd get another tomorrow.

I had its twin, the Dodge Coronet in "DARK YELLOW GREEN METALLIC.' Great color, but "The Green Latrine" was a bit more - uh - mercurial on its build quality and reliability. It was a great-looking car, with a roofline designed as a four-door instead of some modified stretched version of the Charger, sold as a mid-size but with the room of an Impala, but it would literally go out of alignment backing off the alignment rack, door hinges, valve lifters, transmission issues, clutch, the column shift linkage.... and when I went in for voltage regulators (frequently) the parts clerk asked the serial number then thumbed through several parts catalogs until he found the current supplier. If I'd been shopping for a muscle car in '69, I would have prowled through the used lots looking for something fiberglass: a '63 Avanti built by Studebaker, preferably the R2 supercharged model, though with global warming (we have hindsight going for us, remember, I might have ticked the R1 normally aspirated engine, three-speed stick with overdrive (rare dealer option). and factory air, and all the power accessories.

Well...it's not a 1969...BUT it's a 19701/2 Malibu 396 V8 "HEAVY CHEVY" I bought it in 1977 for $1,500 from my aunt (Who bought a 1977 Corvette Stingray) it was my high school pride & I still have it...I was 17 years old in 1977..I'm now 63 years young & Love to see peoples faces at Car Shows..I've been offered $50,000 for it by a local attorney here in Arizona

Cwazie. I grew up in the time when these special cars were available. I personally had a 1973 super duty Trans Am. I would give anything to have that car back. I never had a opportunity to buy one of these special cars, but I did have a opportunity to buy a 71 hemi Cuda for $5500. Was early 80's and I went to the super duty that was purchased for $1800.

My dad had this opportunity, except it wasn't cars, it was P-51 Mustangs. They were fresh from the assembly line, in crates, never assembled, and being chucked at whoever wanted them for $1,500.00 each in 1955, which is just shy of $16,600.00 today. A flying P-51-D goes for over $2 million today.

My dad was doing a deal on a 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger off the showroom floor of Canoga Park Dodge, They we're giving them away, and he just happened to be looking while my Mom was shopping. He went back to the Mall picked her up brought her back to the dealership showed her the car... And she hated the pointed nose and the big wing on the back. Who knew?

I bought a '70 Ford XL, loaded 429 for $3868. Took delivery October 1,1969 at Floyd Rice Ford in Detroit. Could've bought a 429 Boss Mustang for $5500. Back then in the mid west, it was impossible to have a rust free 4 or 5 year old vehicle, especially Mopars. Mopars had fantastic drivetrains, too bad the bodies didn't hold up to salted winter roads. Back then , cars didn't rust, they disintegrated in no time. The XL got T-boned by a truck exactly 1 year later. Took the insurance money and plunked it down on a 3 bedroom brick ranch. Sold the house in '77, made 18k. Bought a 3 year old T-Bird that soon was rusted and paint was flaking off. I knew guys who readjusted and realigned panels as soon as they took delivery of their new car. Great quality, not.

Years ago I had a book on Muscle cars that showed a Paisley print interior that blew my mind. I was 9 year's old in '69 but I would have bought a Mopar. I was hooked on Mopar's and a '69 Formula S Barracuda would have been my first choice. In '71, my older brother picked up a '67 Barracuda notchback. Beautiful car. I have a '71 340 Challenger convertible now. She need's TLC right now but she still gets to me in a good way. Truthfully, they are all great.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the block... I once had a '78 Renault 5 (branded as "Le Car" in the USA), with the optional rubbery sunroof that made it very similar to a convertible. It was a "Deluxe" version, meaning that the wheels were 13" (instead of 12"), with 4 lug nuts (instead of 3), and you could open the rear windows a little. It had a 1.3 liter engine, producing 58 hp.

I had a friend that had one of those. We called it the “Lee car”. There was only barely enough room between the steering wheel & dash for your fingers to fit while holding the wheel. He hated it. I don’t blame him. Thankfully, I had a 280Z! 😄

I picked up a 68 coronet R/T 15-20 years ago. No rust ever, It was turned into a drag car early in its life, 440 hi-rise two 4's, Dana 60. Unfortunately someone changed it into an automatic, I'd like to find a 4 speed and put it back on the road or sell it

In 1969 I was only 13 so I little too young to drive but my dad did get a 69 cougar with a 351 engine and I did my driving test in that same car in 1975

In 1971, when I was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK. I bought a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS with a 383, 4bbl, and a Hurst 4 speed. I put headers on it and it was hot. Was just like the green Barracuda shown in this video. But then I got sent to Germany and stored it at home, or so I thought. My Dad sold it and I've never seen another like it.

I had the same year but a different version the 69 Firebird hardtop overhead cam inline (straight) 6 only 230 horsepower but it still could jump kicking myself for selling it for 4,000 20 years ago

It was rather hard to buy a muscle car in 68 or 69. I was priced a new 396/375 Camaro for $3600. The payments were a doable $100 a month. But the insurance was another $100/month. If you brought home $100 a week in those days you had a pretty good job.

My dad ordered the 1969 428 Super Cobra Jet Ranchero , black on red with the 4speed. My first car, my dad bought for my college commute, was a 1970 Oldsmobile 442, and the first car I bought was a 1969 Pontiac GTO, it had the original 400 in it, I swapped a 428 out of a 66 Catalina convertible, and that was by far, the quickest car I ever drove. I haven’t got my foot on Tesla yet…..

Had a 73 Duster 340 red with 2 white strips from the front fender all the way to the quarter panel and then on both 340,In addition had a 83 Hurst Olds with 2 shifters on the low counsel and t tops silver with spoiler on the rear trunk black strips with Hurst Olds on the fenders air induction on the hood on both sides cloth interior black beautiful piece of machinery.Thank you.

While it's not a 6 figure sale, I have a 1969 Javelin SST, 290, 4 speed manual fitted with the Sidewinders. My father restored it back in the early 80s. It was purchased from the original owner who was one of my HS football coaches and teachers. You don't see many of them at events. That's one thing I really like about it.

Had a 69 AMX 500 Special once. Big Bad Green, 390 four speed with factory Hurst quick shift. Unfortunately, I almost killed myself in it being stupid. Still have the engine. Maybe some day I can build another one. Older and wiser now.

Bought a Cortez Silver 69 L88 427, M22, J56, K66, 3.7 Posi, factory supplied headers, side-pipes and flares, no radio, no air and no power steering. Fitted10 inch US Indy mags, Guildstrand suspension, a radiator shroud and alloy fan, oil cooler and not much else, but man, what a ride. Sold it for a huge profit and although I would love to still own the car and realise it is worth a ton of money today, I used the sale price wisely and as a result have assets way in excess of it's value today because of it. And I still have the memories and photos. Probably the most travelled L88 in existence, having seen both street and some track use in the U.S. Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, India and Australia. It is today 100% restored and original.

I remember in the mid and late 90s an unrestored Superbird or Daytona was less than 30k in autotrader magazine...and restored mopars with 440-6 regularly sold for 30k or less and 426 Hemi cars were less than 40k...and we thought that was expensive back then, well it was actually...everything is relative...

I was making good money at 16 (1969) but I wouldnt part with my 59 Pontiac Bonneville hardtop w/389. Topped her out at 145mph and loved it. My next car was a pontiac sprint (73). Then a few years later I had a 72 cougar w/302 in it. Wow ! What a road eater ! Good vid though. I also liked the GTO as a favorite.

In 1971 my brother bought a 70' Boss 302 Mustang, he drove it for a few years and parked it, in1975 he wanted to buy a white 74' Corvette. I went with him to see it and at the time I was 16, we were looking at the Corvette and I got in an argument with him in front of the owner of the Corvette and told him" you can buy Corvettes all day but you will NEVER find another Boss". He still has it to this day.I could have bought a blue Boss 429 in 78' for $3500 , it need work but it was in good shape.
