This is Shree Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple. It's a 300 year old temple, built in a cave, and is an important cultural & historical heritage of Karachi. The temple also houses a fresh water stream inside, that is used for religious purposes. This is the place that is mentioned in the Mahabharata, as Lord Shiva’s residence on Earth. Legend has it, that Lord Shiva used to live in this underground cave for centuries before he retired from here. They believe that he still visits the temple at times, in the shape of a snake. This is also the place where Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, used to meditate. According to Hindu belief, this is the exact point where the city of Karachi sprung up from. The temple’s nearness to the coastline has a special significance; the way many Muslims believe that the holy presence of Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s mazaar (which is near the temple) helps stall natural disasters such as a cyclone or a tsunami, many Hindu’s believe the same of this temple. The temple is especially a big attraction during the festival of the Maha Shiv Ratri, where pilgrims from across the country fly here to celebrate the day that Lord Shiva married goddess Parvati. Hindus engage in all day fasts, all night vigils and the offering of bael leaves in hopes of renewing their spiritual energy and gaining the favor of Lord Shiva.

This process of targeting especially the Hindus (who still make up the largest religious minority in Pakistan), Christians, and other minority Muslims such as the Ahmadis, has directly correlated with the increased influence of hard-line Islam and the “Talibanization” of the country; something if not fully abated, then tacitly tolerated by each successive government. It is worth quoting Farahnaz Ispahani at length: “At the time of partition in 1947, almost 23% of Pakistan’s population was [composed] of non-Muslim citizens. Today, the proportion of non-Muslims has declined to approximately 3%. The distinctions among Muslim denominations have also become far more accentuated over the years. Muslim groups such as the Shias who account for approximately 20-25% of Pakistan’s Muslim population, Ahmadis who have been declared non-Muslim by the writ of the state, and non-Muslim minorities such as Christians, Hindus and Sikhs have been the targets of suicide bomb attacks on their neighborhoods, had community members converted to Islam against their will, and had their houses of worship attacked and bombed even while they were inhabited by worshipers.”
