This video is Part 3 in this series that covers our 1970 Hindustan Ambassador engine rebuild. In this video we recheck our findings from the compression test conducted a few videos earlier. It was expected for this BMC B-series engine to have leaky valves. Not only were the valves found to be leaky, they were worn beyond rescue. The valves had sunk and worn into the seats. The valve to guide clearance was also out of spec. For these engines, which design wise are identical to MGB, MGA and Morris Oxford series of vehicles, standard steel guides should have about 0.0015" to 0.0025" clearance but our guides were worn unevenly to have as much as 0.006" clearance. Although we are not going to rebuild this engine to the extent of reboring the block, having the cylinder head as perfect to Hindustan Motors specification would mean one less variable in the equation of this already imperfect rebuild approach!
In addition to that, we even resurfaced the Amby's head due to it being our of spec for flatness. Basically, by the end of this video, we had a practically brand new Ambassador cylinder head to fit onto the car.

I find it really surprising and slightly shocking that starting in 1958 with the Ambassador Marl 1, and going up until maybe the late 80's or early 90's too, the Ambassador Mark 2, Ambassador Mark 3, Ambassador Mark 4, all had the exact same engine! Funnily enough, this 1970 Amby, to my astonishment has a Mark 4 or Mark 3 cylinder head fitted on (as per my machinist).
If you are watching from a different continent, it might be interesting to note that not just the various generations of Ambassadors, the Morris Oxford series 3, Morris Oxford series 4, Morris Oxford Series 5 as well as the MG Mga, MGB and many other BMC cars had the exact same engine with slightly different displacements and specifications. So, although I do not claim to be an expert in any sort of way, these videos can be used as a visual reference by someone, like myself, new to working on these cars!
