Kanan Devi, with a collection of Superhit Old Bengali Film Songs requires no introduction in the world of Bengali Music Industry. Kanan Devi worked very hard to get the limelight. During the starting of Kanan Devi’s career there was Bholada -a well wisher who taught Kanan Devi many songs. Kanan Devi’s training from Allah Rakha happened at later date, when she was capable of appointing a teacher at her own expense. However, Allah Rakha the famous ustaad from Lucknow, taught her the outstanding grammar of music. Kanan Devi got the chance in films by Shri Tulsi Banerjee. She next appeared in SHANKARACHARYA (1927), but in such a small role that she went not credited.
Kanan Devi’s musical talents were discovered from the notorious Gholadanga area of Howrah, but Hiren Bose can be credited as her first real trainer. After that, she was finally given shelter at Megaphone by Shri J.N. Ghosh. Shri J.N. Ghosh, was the only person in the film and music world whom Kanan Devi called BABA. She was given a separate room for living and singing and here maestros like Kaji Najrul Islam, Vishmabeb Chattopadhyay, Gyan Datta and Binode Behari Ganguly became her regular trainers. Music lessons apart, Shri J.N.Ghosh engaged a teacher, Mrs Gabbey for Kanan Devi to learn English. She started recording discs right from the beginning of Megaphone Company and in fact the fifth record published by the company. The album Raai Binodini By Kanan Devi or Best of Kanan Old Bengali Songs is a compilation of some of the very popular Old Bengali Songs like Raai Binodini Dole, Rakhal Rajare and Ghar Je Amay Daak Diyechhe etc. This is a must listen for any Old Bengali Songs listener.
