I haven't uploaded anything in years, so this is an update on how I walk recently. Obviously the audio is terrible, but it's not too important. Mastering prosthetic gait is always a work in progress. There's plenty to pick apart here, but I'm grateful to walk the way I do.
Socket: Baylor Socket (a socket style I co-invented)
Hip: Helix 7E10 (Ottobock)
Heavy-duty thigh connectors: 4R156, 4R156=2 (Ottobock)
Rotator: 4R57 (Ottobock)
Knee: C-leg 4 (Ottobock)
Foot: Allpro 6" (Fillauer)

My mom just had a hip disarticulation this past Tuesday. Can you offer any insight/wisdom to a new amputee? Best way/position herself to be comfortable while sleeping? Best pillows/wedges?How you prevent pressure wounds? Best prosthetics and ones that are hard to use and should be avoided? Anything we can glean from you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
@chajabalk
@chajabalk 10 ай бұрын
best advice I can offer is to get really really strong. Get good on crutches, get good balancing on one foot. All other problems fade as you get strong. Don't wait for a prosthesis to begin trying. You must already be strong in order to learn to walk with a prosthesis.

comfortable? you for the response. I truly appreciate it. Sadly, after being in ICU for 60 days prior to the HD... she has become very weak so she definitely has a long road ahead to rebuilding strength. What helps the most avoiding pressure wounds/bed sores? Did you experience any of this? If so, do you have any favorite pillows, wedges, etc. that made things better?
@chajabalk
@chajabalk 10 ай бұрын
I didn't really face those issues as a 16-year-old, so I don't really have any answers for you there. If you're motivating a family member, you must plant in their head a reason to get strong. A future wedding, a vacation, grandchildren? Anything like that helps tremendously as people get stronger @@4H1M-dt6br

I just saw your walking and tbh i couldn't even dream of walking like that, YOU R AWESOME. Here in belgium i only know the Cleg and the helix hip joint from ottobock, not sure about that. Also your socket is looking very cumy, mine is hard casket. Is it possible to see a short clip off the socket please?

Man, hi! I admire your walking. I also have disarticulation. For a long time I walked with a very cheap prosthesis. Recently I got more expensive. 7E9 hip, 3R60 knee, foot 1C30. What can you say about this configuration? And do you think it’s possible to walk at least approximately and go down the stairs with this configuration? Sorry for my English and good luck to you.
@chajabalk
@chajabalk 10 ай бұрын
That configuration sounds great. It's possible to walk very well with that configuration, but going down stairs won't be this smooth. I used to use that knee and I can go down stairs, but it's going to be a fast, uncontrolled drop down to the next step.

Hey chandler, I lost my left leg basically at the hip in 2011 from a car accident. I have 3 inches of femur bone so my limb really serves no purpose so I wear an interface that a Hip would wear. I watched your videos every day in the hospital when you were posting years ago, and recently just wondered if you had any new ones and I found this! I'm on my second prosthetic now, I started with the C-leg with a helix hip with a rotator at the ankle. Currently I have the Endolite linx with a helix hip and a carbon bikini interface. I walk the best I ever have but with my height and how big the foot is on the linx I could not have that rotator at the ankle anymore. I am in hopes that my office will try my insurance for the Genium X3. They are hesitant because it sounds like when they do get approved, which is rare, they don't turn much profit. I walk the best, i have a very physical warehouse job, I am around water as a boat owner, and just live a physical life. Especially being married with 2 young kids lol. I am very interested in the benefits of the high back interface you have on. I went to the bikin for flexibility, but im very curious to the benefits of your? Also I am sorry for the long message, I never thought I'd get a chance to reach out let alone ask advice. Thanks for sharing and being an inspiration
@chajabalk
@chajabalk 2 жыл бұрын
I got denied on an X3 right before my first baby was born. Insurance is a joke. Even as a prosthetist, it's hard to get things approved at all. Glad you're using your leg and getting after it! I explain the high back benefits in a comment reply below. Let me know if it's unclear.

@@chajabalk thanks for the reply. I'm currently in the process of getting a new bikini socket and a genium. The step counter In my endolite linx has recorded 6million 2hundred thousand steps in 2 years. Seems to be pretty worn out so were hoping the genium hold up with my lifestyle

I`m a hip disarticulated prosthetic user for 1 year now and I have tried all the ottobock knee`s. I went for the C- leg as it is the best and lightest of the Genium and C- leg. I found that weight is importen when you are hip disarticulated. The genium x3 is 500g heavier than the c- leg and it also have several modes that will not be to my benefit when hip articulated. This is just my opinion so it might be working different to other hip disarticulated.

Chandler my husband is hip disarticulated as well. He just got his prosthetic a few weeks ago and has started PT. Do you use shorts or Speedo under your prosthetic? My husband needs someone to talk with and ask questions.

Most people use a hip sock made by knitrite (your prosthetist will know). I use sewn lycra shorts similar to underarmour. Find hip disartic groups on Facebook (request an invite) and many people can help you, myself included.

Hey, just wondering, what’s the advantage to the higher back socket you have here over the conventional design?
@chajabalk
@chajabalk 2 жыл бұрын
It makes walking far easier because it allows the keel of the foot to passively load into late stance and explosively leave the ground without me having to put in extra work to walk. I have trimmed it down in the past and walking became far more energy-consuming.

Hemis get unfairly lumped in with hip disartics. Yes, much of the parts and pieces of the prosthesis would be the same, but it is fundamentally harder to walk without half your pelvis.
