Ray Price is one of my very favorite artists, I saw him live more times than I could count, even met the man! Ray started out with a more raw honky tonk sound. In fact, having been good friends with Hank Williams he pushed himself to sound like Hank- Ray even toured with Hanks band after Hank passed. Then in the early 60s artists like Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves had some hits that crossed over to the pop charts, well, after that country's popularity grew and it became more mainstream. Naturally pop artists started covering country songs! At that time in country music, you had the steel, banjo, the bass, fiddle and a guitar- that was about it. Many country bands didn't even have drums. Ray began hearing all of these pop artists playing country songs with huge string arrangements then said "if they can make all of that money covering our songs, why can't a country boy add strings to his music"? So around 1967 Ray released his "Danny Boy" album featuring huge string arrangements and background vocals etc... which stirred up some huge controversy... Price didn't care... his popularity EXPLODED! He continued touring for the rest of his life, and his voice never failed him. In 2012 he was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. He was 86 at the time. He fought like hell. Lasted over a year and for a while it even appeared to have gone into remission. Ray, knowing that he was about to die, went into the studio. He recorded a new album called "Beauty Is" as a sort of a goodbye to his wife and his fans. During this time in 2013, Ray did a couple of live shows. I went to one with my wife. Ray needed help onto the stage, he was thin, frail, his body ravaged from the chemo treatments. They helped him walk out to a stool. My wife and I both teared up. Then he started to sing. That AMAZING voice of his still came out of that frail shell FLAWLESSLY. Here is a cell phone clip of one of those last shows, pay attention that last note he hit! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGPEkGaZfKyMbtk

Ray Price had a very long, illustrious career that transcended the boundaries of country music. "For the Good Times" was a signature hit for him that crossed over to the top 40 pop chart in the 1970s. Though he was a songwriter he recorded very few of his own compositions ("Soft Rain" was an exception that was a hit.) and preferred to record other artists' songs. Early in his career he became known for the "Ray Price shuffle" based on the beat/tempo of his songs (try "Lonely Street" which was recorded by everyone from Patsy Cline to Andy Williams). Price's voice was wonderful - powerful, strong, smooth, and with a wide range. Even in his old age, his voice was a delight and he never broke a sweat on stage. He was close friends with Hank Williams, Sr. who helped him get his breakthrough back in the early 1950s. My personal favorite from his early years is "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes." Excellent artist!

This is such a classic. I think Ray Price sings it best. It's been covered by many. Mama used to sing this when doing chores. Didn't quite fit but she loved it. She also sang Make The World Go Away by Eddie Arnold. He is another icon of country music.. Also Chet Atkins is a must in your country journey. He is unequaled in country music as to his guitar abilities. But he also had a very good voice and through his voice and guitar make you feel the music. He has many just instrumental songs. But he also had many which he sang. I suggest Do I Ever Cross Your mind and I Still Can't Change Your Mind. I was fortunate enough to meet him one day where I worked at a deli on Music Row. He sat in my section. It was so hard to maintain my professionalism and not just fan girl out. He was so nice. He asked me how I was doing and did I like working there and that sort of thing. He left an extremely good tip and a nice note to the owner complementing my service. I saw quite a few recording artist while working there but he was the only one I waited on. I always have been long winded. I still embarrasse my girls with it. But aren't parents supposed to embarrasse their children? OK I'll hush now. 😁✌

Hey! My dad (Bob Emerson) was the drummer on the studio version of this record! He recorded and toured with Ray Price for about 2 years. I don't know which other cuts my dad played on during that time, but I know for sure that he played on For The Good Times. He had been a "big band/swing" orchestra leader in the 40s, 50s, and early 60s, but he always said that rock-n-roll put him out of business. People didn't want to go out to the ballrooms to listen/dance to big band music any more. He just couldn't get the hang of rock drumming (by his own admission), and I suspect that he wasn't good enough to play jazz either (which he loved), so he ended up playing country for the rest of his life. He wasn't a fan of country, but that's where the work was for someone like him. He had a lot of respect for Ray Price, both as a man and boss, and as a vocalist. However, he wasn't fond of life on the road, nor the drugs that some of the other musicians indulged in (my dad drank and smoked, but drugs were not for him). When another band member secretly stashed his weed in my dad's luggage before they crossed the border, my dad had enough, and left the tour.

I’m going to enjoy this journey. Ray Price was a very diverse artist. At his core he was country but he was also a top-notch crooner in the vein of Tony Bennett, Perry Como and that got him in trouble with some country music fans. He just didn’t stay in his swim lane. Not many artists can pull off the diversity that Ray Price did in his career and still be at the top of his game. Just beware that when you listen to Ray Price he more than likely has done that same song in a completely different style. There is a youtube video that someone has posted with 4 very distinct versions of him doing Soft Rain that is a great example. He also was an exceptional singer into his 80’s. His final album “Beauty Is... The Final Sessions” was cut when he was 86 years old and it’s top-notch.
@alanh15082 жыл бұрын
This song reminds me of another Kristofferson song "Help Me Make Through The Night". Many artist have recorded it, Sammi Smith was the first to have a hit with it. I like that you give credit to songwriters as well as the artist doing the performing. The thing that impresses me about Ray Price is he comes out dressed in a tux, takes the microphone and opens his mouth and sings. He didn't feel the the necessity to gyrate or do vocal acrobatics he just sang, and the listener experienced the emotions that the songwriter was wished to convey.

Glad to see you returned to Ray Price so soon. For a country act to be successful in Texas it had to be a dance band. The three dominate bands of the 50's and 60's were Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadors, Hank Thompson's Brazos Valley Boys and Ray Price's Cherokee Cowboys. At one time or another Willie Nelson, Roger Miller and Jack Greene all played in Price's band. The songs that I feel are significant from Ray Price begin with Crazy Arms, Release Me, Cold, Cold War With You, Invitation to Blues (written by Miller), Night Life (written by Nelson), and Danny Boy. Ray Price was a favorite of Johnny Carson and made a number of appearances on his show.

Ray Price was a little before my time but he brought a nuanced, dignified voice and manner to every song he did. "For the Good Times" was a massive hit and it was one of the songs Elvis loved to do in concert in the early to mid 70s (it's featured on his triple platinum "As Recorded at Madison Square Garden" album from June of 1972).

This song is a masterpiece and also a perfect example of the "Nashville" sound. Strings, piano, little to no "twang". It is in sharp contrast to the driving, joyous beat coming out of Bakersfield CA at the same time. Like any profitable idea, the "Nashville sound" got overdone. Producers had all the power. They hired the talent, told them how and what sing, and decided who would play on the records. This song is just a few short years before the "Outlaw" movement in country music. Willie, Waylon, and "tha boys" were rebelling against the Nashville Sound and all the rules. They wanted to do their music, their way. In less than a decade, the nashville sound would be overtaken / surpassed by "outlaw country" in popularity and more important sales. That's when everyone became an "outlaw", dressing and trying to sound like the early innovators.
