What I always liked about the Statler Brothers is that their harmonies sound comfortable, natural, and unforced. So many times when you have four people harmonizing, they sound like they are working hard, but with the Statler Brothers, is just sort sort of easy to listen to, and everything fits.

This actually brings a nostalgic tear because 99% of these things represent snippets of my growing up years. There's something about nearly all of those things that are somehow embedded deep in my DNA. And let's talk about the song writing! That was a masterful piece of work, weaving all those random products and cultural icons into a solid rhyming scheme. Major kudos to the song writer!

I was a senior in High School when this song came out. Those were the Good Ole Days. I remember growing up listening to the Grand Ole opry all through the 1960's into the 1970's every Saturday on our Home Radio as a Family. No TV where we lived out in the country. I have been hooked on Country all my life since those early days. Pushing towards the big # 70 soon and Maw and I can still dance to some of those old tunes when they come on the radio or if we put on a record from back then. We still have those 45's and numerous old albums we just love to still play. We just love your show DJ PJ. Thanks for the Memories!

The Statler Brothers and the Gatlin Brothers were and are among the very best. Alabama, the band came later, and is probably my favorite country band of all time.

Cigarette Loads. I had forgotten about those. With this being the 4th of July weekend, I'm reminded that the Statler Brothers used to do a "Happy Birthday America" concert/celebration on this weekend in their idyllic home town of Staunton Virginia, that hadn't changed much in appearance in 50 years or more, in celebration of Independence Day. The stage was in center field of the baseball field in the central park of this small town in the Blue Ridge and local organizations & charities set up games and concessions to raise money. People came from all 50 states and some foreign countries and set up lawn chairs on the field to listen to guest bands who played all afternoon and into the night. The Statlers would close the show of course and the night would end with fireworks. On one occasion I had a CB radio in my van sitting in the traffic created by everyone leaving at once and all the chatter was about leaving a dream-like experience and heading back to the rat race. No one wanted it to end. Happy Birthday America indeed. Thanks guys.

I know what you mean by theatrical. As I had mentioned in another post, they were more than singers, they were entertainers. And that quality really came out in their weekly TV show. They would have several kinds of segments on the show. A mix of comedy, drama, song, and story telling. We don't have musical shows anymore. A class act through their whole career. And they had the ability to draw you into the song. If you didn't actually remember those things, you did at the end of the song. I do remember several and I actually have Dixie cup lids with movie stars on them.
